View DetailsVarious Pigtail In Practice
A pigtail exists so that the hardest part of the job, putting a clean connector on a fiber, happens in a factory instead of a manhole. What the field crew is left with is a fusion splice, which is a repeatable operation with a machine that reports its own loss.
Problems This Range Solves
- Field-terminated connectors whose loss varies with the weather and the technician
- Splice trays loaded one fiber at a time when a bundle would do it in a single operation
- Color coding that does not survive the transition from cable to tray
- Pigtail tails too short to route properly inside a closure, forcing tight bends
- Mismatched polish between the pigtail and the distribution frame
Who It Is For
- FTTH contractors terminating distribution cable into closures and boxes
- ODF and patch panel builders loading splice trays at scale
- Central office teams splicing onto backbone cable
- Maintenance crews carrying repair kits for emergency restoration
- Assembly houses building their own boxes and terminal units
Where It Is Used
- Terminating feeder cable inside a dome or horizontal splice closure
- Loading 12-fiber trays in a rack-mounted ODF
- Splicing subscriber drops inside an FTTH termination box
- Building custom terminal boxes on an assembly bench
- Emergency restoration of a damaged distribution cable
What You Get From Our Various Pigtail
Advantages
- Connector end face made and tested under factory conditions
- Field work reduced to a fusion splice, which the splicer measures for you
- Bundle versions load a twelve-fiber tray in one pass
- Color-coded buffers that follow standard fiber identification
- Tail lengths chosen for the enclosure so routing stays inside the bend radius
Technical Features
- Factory-polished ferrule with inspected end face
- 900 µm tight buffer or 250 µm bare fiber tail depending on the tray
- Color-coded buffer following standard fiber identification order
- Bundle and fan-out versions for multi-fiber trays
- Waterproof versions for outdoor and direct-entry enclosures
Materials
- Zirconia ceramic ferrule
- 900 µm tight-buffered fiber or bare fiber tail
- Aramid yarn reinforcement where the design carries load
- Thermoplastic boot and housing
- Furcation tubing on bundle versions
Customization Options
- Tail length matched to the enclosure you are loading

How It Is Used In The Field
PON Street Cabinet Split Point
How a feeder fiber becomes subscriber ports inside a street cabinet, and which decisions are expensive to reverse
MDU Riser Fiber Distribution
Distributing fiber up an apartment riser so units can be connected one at a time without disturbing the rest
Central Office ODF Consolidation
Turning a fiber plant that grew without a frame into one a new engineer can read
Specifying and Handling Various Pigtail
Before You Order
- Check buffer color against the tray plan before stripping anything
- Strip, clean and cleave to the splicer's stated dimensions
- Fusion splice and record the splicer's loss estimate
On Site
- Protect the splice with a heat-shrink sleeve and seat it in the tray
- Coil the tail inside the tray without dropping below the fiber's bend radius
- Cap the connector until the frame side is ready to be patched
Various Pigtail Questions
Why use a pigtail instead of terminating the cable directly?
Because a factory-made end face is more repeatable than one polished in a closure. Splicing a pigtail on moves the difficult step indoors and leaves the field crew a fusion splice whose loss the machine reports.
What tail length should I order?
Long enough to route around the inside of your closure or tray without tight bends, and no longer. Tell us the enclosure you are loading and we will suggest a length that coils cleanly.
Do you supply bundle pigtails in standard color order?
Yes. Bundle and 12-fiber versions follow the standard fiber identification color sequence, and we can supply a different sequence if your plant uses its own convention.
Can I get APC pigtails for a PON build?
Yes. APC is normally what you want on PON and RF-over-glass distribution because the angled end face pushes reflections out of the core. Specify APC per order and the housings will be green.
Are waterproof pigtails available for outdoor enclosures?
Yes, we supply waterproof pigtail versions intended for direct entry into outdoor closures and pedestals. Confirm the gland and enclosure type on your inquiry.
