View DetailsField Assembly/Fast Connector In Practice
A fast connector puts a factory-polished stub inside the connector body and holds the field fiber against it with a mechanical splice and index-matching gel. The crew needs a cleaver and a hand tool, not a fusion splicer, which changes what a drop install costs and who can do it.
Problems This Range Solves
- Fusion splicers that are too expensive to put in every van
- Drop terminations that need doing in a stairwell with no power
- Emergency restoration where a splicer is not available
- Training burden for crews who only terminate occasionally
- Re-work when a field termination fails and has to be redone
Who It Is For
- FTTH drop installation crews
- Broadband service call technicians
- Building and MDU cabling contractors
- Maintenance crews doing emergency restoration
- Enterprise IT teams making occasional fiber terminations
Where It Is Used
- Terminating a subscriber drop at the premises
- Restoring a broken patch cord in a live cabinet
- MDU riser terminations where a splicer cannot be set up
- Test and temporary connections during commissioning
- Enterprise fiber repairs by non-specialist staff

Specifying and Handling Field Assembly/Fast Connector
Before You Order
- Use a precision cleaver; cleave angle is the main cause of high loss here
- Clean the fiber with a lint-free wipe before insertion
- Insert until the fiber visibly bows slightly, then lock the mechanism
On Site
- Verify with a visual fault locator or power meter before closing up
- On reusable versions, re-cleave rather than reusing a damaged fiber end
- Record which terminations were mechanical rather than fusion spliced
Field Assembly/Fast Connector Questions
How does a fast connector compare with a fusion splice?
A fusion splice normally gives lower and more predictable loss, and it is what you want on backbone and distribution work. A fast connector trades a little loss for speed and for not needing a splicer, which is often the right trade on a subscriber drop.
Can a fast connector be reused if the termination fails?
Reusable versions allow the mechanism to be released so the fiber can be re-cleaved and re-inserted. Single-use versions cannot. Confirm which type you are ordering if field re-work matters to you.
What fiber types can be terminated?
Versions are available for 250 µm coated fiber, 900 µm tight-buffered fiber and flat drop cable. Tell us what your crews actually carry and we will match the part.
Do I need special tools?
A precision cleaver and the matching hand tool. No power, no fusion splicer and no heat-shrink oven. Cleaver quality has a direct effect on the loss you achieve.
Are APC versions available for PON drops?
Yes. APC fast connectors are supplied for PON and RF-over-glass paths where back reflection matters, and they are color coded green as usual.
