Deck Cable Protection Package for an Offshore Platform

Heavy wall flame retardant protection where salt spray and mechanical abuse both apply

Deck Cable Protection Package for an Offshore Platform

Client Background

An operator was refurbishing deck and module cabling on an offshore platform. Existing cable protection had degraded under a combination of salt spray UV and mechanical contact with steel structure.

Project Challenge

Specify a single protection material for positions that are simultaneously wet salt laden and mechanically abusive, with classification society approval for the survey file.

Customer Pain Points

  • Two requirements that most products satisfy only one of at a time
  • Classification society approval needed before the surveyor would accept the material
  • Cable dragged over steel structure during installation losing its jacket before commissioning
  • Deck work windows dictated by weather not by programme

Our Solution

S3(h) heavy wall flame retardant tubing for the free end positions and R1 wraparound sleeves where cable was already terminated. Both carry the flame retardant wet service formulation and the heavy wall gives real abrasion allowance.

Manufacturing Process

Flame retardant grade formulated for wet and underground service with the thickened heavy wall design. Adhesive lined for every position on the platform.

Supply Chain Coordination

Material delivered to the supply base ahead of the weather window with a float allowance so a lost window did not create a material shortage.

Quality Control

Per lot testing plus CCS ABS and DNV approval documentation assembled for the survey file.

Final Result

The refurbishment completed within the available weather windows. The surveyor accepted the material on the documentation supplied without requiring additional testing.

Customer Benefit

One material that satisfies both the fire requirement and the mechanical requirement, with the paperwork the surveyor needs already assembled.

FAQ

Questions About This Project

When do I need heavy wall rather than medium wall
Where the position is mechanically abusive as well as wet. Offshore decks crane cables and buried joints in stony ground are the typical cases.
Does the heavy wall reduce flexibility
Yes. A heavy wall tube is stiffer both before and after recovery. Where the cable must flex continuously choose the medium wall grade.
What documentation does a surveyor need
The classification society approval covering the specific product plus the batch record. We assemble both for the shipment.
How is material prepared in a salt environment
Wash the salt off first then dry then wipe with solvent. This is the single most important step and the most commonly skipped one.
