Product Overview

What Y3 Does

Cross-linked polyolefin, non-tracking, mastic applied to collars.Suitable for insulation of outdoor power cable termination.

Red anti tracking skirts with mastic collars that build creepage distance on outdoor terminations from 1 kV to 36 kV It is manufactured by Dalian United Polymer Material Co., Ltd. in Dalian China where radiation cross linking extrusion and molding are all performed in house under one quality system.

Key Benefits

  • Creepage distance added in defined increments so the design is calculable
  • Non tracking cross linked polyolefin that resists surface erosion under dry band arcing
  • Mastic collars that seal each shed to the termination so water cannot get behind it
  • UV and weather resistant so the shed profile survives years of exposure
  • Fitted new or retrofitted to a termination already in service

Who It Is For

Who Benefits Most from Y3

The buyers and site teams this product was designed around

Utilities in Coastal and Polluted Regions

Salt fog cement dust and industrial fallout shorten the effective creepage path on any outdoor termination.

Desert and High Altitude Network Operators

Sand deposition and low air density both raise the flashover risk on an outdoor termination.

Renewable Project Contractors

Solar sites in agricultural and coastal areas where the collector terminations sit in the open.

Substation Maintenance Teams

Retrofitting extra creepage onto existing terminations that flash over in dirty conditions.

Problems It Solves

Problems This Product Removes

Every one of these is a failure mode we have seen on real networks

Pollution Turns a Clean Surface into a Leakage Path

A film of salt or dust plus dew creates a conducting layer. Sheds break that path by creating a protected dry zone under each skirt.

The Straight Surface of a Termination Has Limited Creepage

Each shed adds surface length without adding termination height. That is the cheapest way to raise the creepage ratio.

Terminations Flash over During the First Rain After a Dry Spell

This is when the accumulated pollution dissolves. Sheds keep part of the surface dry throughout.

Retrofitting Sheds Onto an Existing Termination Is Usually Impossible

Y3 sheds slide over the finished termination and shrink into place with mastic collars sealing each one.

Application Scenarios

Where It Is Used

Outdoor MV Terminations

Standard fitment on any WSY outdoor termination in the C15 and C35 families.

Coastal Substations

Terminations within salt spray range of the sea.

Cement and Mining Sites

High dust deposition environments.

Pole Top Terminations

Overhead to underground transitions exposed to full weather.

Retrofit on Flashover Prone Terminations

Adding creepage to an existing installation that has a poor service record.

Manufacturing and Quality

How It Is Made and Checked

Compounding extrusion radiation cross linking expansion and test all under one roof in Dalian

  1. 01

    Compounding

Base polyolefin antioxidants flame retardants and functional fillers are mixed to a recipe held under our own formulation control rather than bought as a masterbatch.

  2. 02

    Extrusion

The compound is extruded to the required wall and diameter. Co extruded products form two or three layers in a single pass so no interface can trap air.

  3. 03

    Radiation Cross Linking

Electron beam irradiation creates the cross linked network that gives the material its shape memory. This step is what makes the product heat shrinkable.

  4. 04

    Expansion

The cross linked part is heated expanded to its supplied diameter and cooled under tension so the expanded shape is locked in until heat is applied again.

  5. 05

    Test and Inspection

More than 90 percent of product performance tests are carried out in our own laboratory including tensile elongation heat aging dielectric strength and tracking resistance.

  6. 06

    Packing and Traceability

Each batch carries a production record so a delivered part can be traced back to its compound lot and process parameters.

Use Guide

How to Select and Install Y3

The sequence our engineers walk customers through on every first installation

  1. 01

    Assess the Site Pollution Level

The number of sheds is a function of pollution class not voltage alone. Tell us the site and we will recommend a count.

  2. 02

    Fit the Termination First

Sheds are the last component fitted. Complete the insulation and screen work before starting.

  3. 03

Slide All Sheds on Before Heating

Position every shed at its final spacing before any heat is applied so nothing has to be forced past a shrunk shed.

  4. 04

    Set Even Spacing

Space sheds evenly along the termination. Uneven spacing leaves a long unbroken creepage section which becomes the weak point.

  5. 05

Heat Each Collar from the Centre

Apply heat to the collar not the skirt so the mastic flows and seals against the termination.

  6. 06

    Check the Seal

Mastic should be visible at the collar edge on every shed. No water should be able to get behind a skirt.

FAQ

Y3 Frequently Asked Questions

The questions buyers ask before they place an order

How many rain sheds do I need
It depends on the site pollution class and the required creepage ratio. Light pollution needs 2 to 3 per phase and very heavy salt spray sites need 6 or more. Send us the site location and voltage class and we will calculate it.
Can sheds be retrofitted to an existing termination
Yes provided the termination surface is sound and can be cleaned. That is one of the most common uses of Y3 because it fixes a flashover problem without rebuilding the termination.
Why are the sheds red
Red is the recognised colour for MV insulation and the non tracking compound is formulated in red as standard. Other colours are available on a production run.
Do sheds need to be sealed to the termination
Yes. The mastic collar is what stops water tracking behind the skirt. A shed fitted without the collar sealing is worse than no shed at all.
What recovery temperature is required
150 °C minimum. Heat the collar area rather than the skirt so the mastic reaches temperature and flows.
Are they suitable at 1 kV
They can be used from 1 kV to 36 kV although at 1 kV creepage is rarely the limiting factor. Sheds are most valuable from 6 kV upward.
