Product Overview

What S3(nh) Does

Heavy wall halogen-free polyolefin shrink tubing, thickened design, with or without adhesive liner. Excellent insulation, mechanical protection and sealing of low voltage power cable joints and terminations.

Thickened halogen free polyolefin tubing where the same fire performance is needed with far more mechanical protection It is manufactured by Dalian United Polymer Material Co., Ltd. in Dalian China where radiation cross linking extrusion and molding are all performed in house under one quality system.

Key Benefits

  • Heavy wall mechanical protection with halogen free fire behaviour
  • 3:1 and 4:1 ratios so a single size covers a wide diameter span
  • Operating range -55 to 110 °C for buried tunnel and outdoor service
  • Adhesive lined option for a fully sealed buried joint
  • Same installation technique as S3(n) so no additional crew training

Who It Is For

Who Benefits Most from S3(nh)

The buyers and site teams this product was designed around

Direct Buried Cable Contractors

A buried joint takes abrasion from backfill and ground movement for decades.

Mining and Quarry Electrical Teams

Trailing and reeling cable protection where mechanical abuse is continuous.

Metro and Tunnel Projects

Halogen free is mandatory and cable in a tunnel takes physical abuse during installation.

Port and Heavy Industry Maintenance

Cable in trafficked areas where crush and abrasion damage is routine.

Problems It Solves

Problems This Product Removes

Every one of these is a failure mode we have seen on real networks

Medium Wall Tubing Abrades Through in Buried and Trafficked Positions

The thickened heavy wall design gives a far greater abrasion allowance for the same shrink ratio.

Backfill Stones Puncture Thin Protection

A heavy wall absorbs point loading that would tear a medium wall tube.

Halogen Free Usually Means Giving up Toughness

S3(nh) keeps the halogen free formulation while adding wall thickness so neither requirement is compromised.

Two Products Means Two Stock Lines

S3(nh) uses the same shrink ratios and installation method as S3(n) so a crew that can fit one can fit the other.

Application Scenarios

Where It Is Used

Direct Buried Joint Protection

The outer mechanical and sealing layer on a buried LV or MV joint.

Duct and Trough Installations

Cable protection where it enters and leaves a duct.

Mining Trailing Cable Repair

Heavy duty jacket repair on abused cable.

Tunnel and Metro Cable Protection

Halogen free routes with mechanical exposure.

Port and Crane Cabling

Cable in trafficked and mechanically hostile areas.

Manufacturing and Quality

How It Is Made and Checked

Compounding extrusion radiation cross linking expansion and test all under one roof in Dalian

  1. 01

    Compounding

Base polyolefin antioxidants flame retardants and functional fillers are mixed to a recipe held under our own formulation control rather than bought as a masterbatch.

  2. 02

    Extrusion

The compound is extruded to the required wall and diameter. Co extruded products form two or three layers in a single pass so no interface can trap air.

  3. 03

    Radiation Cross Linking

Electron beam irradiation creates the cross linked network that gives the material its shape memory. This step is what makes the product heat shrinkable.

  4. 04

    Expansion

The cross linked part is heated expanded to its supplied diameter and cooled under tension so the expanded shape is locked in until heat is applied again.

  5. 05

    Test and Inspection

More than 90 percent of product performance tests are carried out in our own laboratory including tensile elongation heat aging dielectric strength and tracking resistance.

  6. 06

    Packing and Traceability

Each batch carries a production record so a delivered part can be traced back to its compound lot and process parameters.

Use Guide

How to Select and Install S3(nh)

The sequence our engineers walk customers through on every first installation

  1. 01

    Confirm the Mechanical Exposure

Choose heavy wall for buried trafficked or abrasive positions and medium wall for protected positions.

  2. 02

    Size for the Largest Step

Heavy wall tubing has less flexibility so measure the largest diameter carefully.

  3. 03

    Allow More Heat Time

A thicker wall takes longer to reach 125 °C throughout. Work steadily and do not rush the outer surface.

  4. 04

Use Adhesive Lined for Buried Work

Any buried joint should use the adhesive lined version so the ends are sealed.

  5. 05

    Shrink from One End

Drive air ahead of the flame from one end to the other.

  6. 06

    Inspect the Whole Length

Look for wrinkles trapped air and burn marks before backfilling.

FAQ

S3(nh) Frequently Asked Questions

The questions buyers ask before they place an order

How much thicker is heavy wall than medium wall
The exact figures are in the dimension table below. Heavy wall is a thickened design at the same nominal sizes so the recovered wall is substantially greater at every size.
Does the thicker wall need a hotter torch
No. The recovery temperature is still 125 °C minimum. It needs more time not more temperature. A hotter flame scorches the surface before the inside recovers.
Is it suitable for direct burial
Yes. With the adhesive lined option it is the recommended outer protection for a direct buried joint.
Can it be used on 36 kV cable
Yes for sealing and mechanical protection. It is not a stress control or primary MV insulation layer.
Is it halogen free like S3(n)
Yes. The formulation is halogen free and RoHS compliant. The only difference is wall thickness.
What colours are available
Black is standard. Other colours are available on a production run.
