Product Overview

What S3(h) Does

Heavy wall flame-retardant polyolefin shrink tubing, thickened design, with or without adhesive liner. Excellent insulation, mechanical protection and sealing for outdoor electrical equipment and connections in wet and underground environments such as marine vessels,off-shore oil platform, shipyard and harbor applications.

The toughest tube in the S3 family combining flame retardant marine formulation with a thickened heavy wall It is manufactured by Dalian United Polymer Material Co., Ltd. in Dalian China where radiation cross linking extrusion and molding are all performed in house under one quality system.

Key Benefits

  • Flame retardant wet service formulation with heavy wall mechanical protection
  • 3:1 and 4:1 shrink ratios so one size covers a wide diameter span
  • Adhesive lined option for a fully sealed marine or buried joint
  • Service range from -55 to 110 °C
  • Same technique as the rest of the S3 family so crews train once

Who It Is For

Who Benefits Most from S3(h)

The buyers and site teams this product was designed around

Offshore Platform and Subsea Support Contractors

Cable protection in the most mechanically and chemically hostile positions.

Port and Crane Operators

Reeling and festoon cable protection where abrasion is continuous.

Heavy Marine Yards

Cable protection during vessel construction where cable is dragged and stood on.

Buried MV Feeder Contractors

Direct buried joints in wet ground that also need flame retardant performance.

Problems It Solves

Problems This Product Removes

Every one of these is a failure mode we have seen on real networks

A Medium Wall Tube Will Not Survive Continuous Mechanical Abuse

The thickened wall raises the abrasion and crush allowance substantially.

Wet and Mechanically Hostile at the Same Time

S3(h) is the only combination in the family that carries both the flame retardant wet service formulation and the heavy wall.

Cable Pulled over Steel Structure Loses Its Jacket

A heavy wall sacrificial layer protects the cable jacket during and after installation.

Repeated Thermal Cycling Opens up a Thin Seal

A heavier adhesive lined wall maintains its seal through more cycles.

Application Scenarios

Where It Is Used

Offshore Platform Cable Protection

Deck and riser cable in the most exposed positions.

Crane and Reeling Cable Repair

Heavy duty jacket repair on continuously flexed cable.

Buried MV Joint Outer Protection

Wet buried joints with a flame retardant requirement.

Shipyard Cable Protection

Protecting cable during vessel construction.

Harbour Quayside Power

Cable in trafficked wet salt environments.

Manufacturing and Quality

How It Is Made and Checked

Compounding extrusion radiation cross linking expansion and test all under one roof in Dalian

  1. 01

    Compounding

Base polyolefin antioxidants flame retardants and functional fillers are mixed to a recipe held under our own formulation control rather than bought as a masterbatch.

  2. 02

    Extrusion

The compound is extruded to the required wall and diameter. Co extruded products form two or three layers in a single pass so no interface can trap air.

  3. 03

    Radiation Cross Linking

Electron beam irradiation creates the cross linked network that gives the material its shape memory. This step is what makes the product heat shrinkable.

  4. 04

    Expansion

The cross linked part is heated expanded to its supplied diameter and cooled under tension so the expanded shape is locked in until heat is applied again.

  5. 05

    Test and Inspection

More than 90 percent of product performance tests are carried out in our own laboratory including tensile elongation heat aging dielectric strength and tracking resistance.

  6. 06

    Packing and Traceability

Each batch carries a production record so a delivered part can be traced back to its compound lot and process parameters.

Use Guide

How to Select and Install S3(h)

The sequence our engineers walk customers through on every first installation

  1. 01

    Confirm Both Requirements

Use S3(h) only where both flame retardant performance and heavy wall protection are needed. Where only one applies a lighter grade is more economical.

  2. 02

    Measure the Diameter Span Carefully

Heavy wall tubing is stiffer so the largest diameter must be measured accurately.

  3. 03

    Wash Salt Off Before Cleaning

Salt residue blocks adhesive bonding. Wash then dry then wipe with solvent.

  4. 04

    Allow Generous Heat Time

A heavy wall at 135 °C recovery takes longer. Keep the flame moving and be patient.

  5. 05

    Shrink from One End

Drive air ahead of the flame in one direction only.

  6. 06

    Inspect Before Handing over

Look for full conformity a continuous adhesive bead and no scorching.

FAQ

S3(h) Frequently Asked Questions

The questions buyers ask before they place an order

When would I choose S3(h) over S3
Choose S3(h) where the position is mechanically abusive as well as wet. Offshore decks crane cables and buried joints in stony ground are the typical cases.
Is it approved for shipboard use
UPM materials hold CCS ABS and DNV approvals. Send us the vessel specification and we will confirm which certificate covers your part number.
Does the heavy wall reduce flexibility
Yes. A heavy wall tube is stiffer both before and after recovery. Where the cable must flex continuously choose the medium wall grade or tell us the bend radius.
Can it be used at 36 kV
Yes for sealing and mechanical protection. It is not a stress control or primary MV insulation layer.
Is adhesive lined dual wall available
Yes and it is the recommended option for every marine and buried position.
What is the standard colour
Black. Other colours are available on a production run.
