ST/UPC-ST/UPC SM Simplex Patchcord is part of the fiber optic patchcord range built by Ever Expresslink Limited in Ningbo, China. It is built on the ST (Straight Tip) interface.
ST fiber cable connector has a bayonet-style housing and a long spring-loaded ferrule hold the fiber. They are available in both multimode or singlemode versions. Horizontally mounted simplex and duplex adapters are available with metal or plastic housing, with a choice of phosphor bronze or zirconia split sleeve. The ST fiber patch is one of the older generations of connector, but is still widely used for multimode networks, including LANs for buildings and campuses.
ST mounts a 2.5 mm ferrule in a bayonet coupling that locks with a quarter turn against a spring. The bayonet pin has to clear the slot fully. A partially rotated ST looks seated but sits off the reference plane and reads high loss.
Single-mode fiber carries one propagation mode in a 9 µm core, so pulse spreading stays low and the link budget is set by loss rather than dispersion. Use it for access, metro and long-haul spans, for PON distribution and for anything that has to survive a future speed upgrade.
UPC is an ultra-physical-contact polish: a domed, highly polished end face that presses fiber core to fiber core. It is the default for most data, enterprise and general telecom patching.
