Why it is built this way

Engineering notes

Ductwork is thin. Signage substrate is thinner. In both cases the fixing has to hold sheet that has almost no material around the hole, and the wide truss head is what stops it tearing through — a large bearing circle in a head that still sits low enough not to catch a sleeve or a duct liner.

It is the most-specified head in our self-tapping range for exactly that reason: it is the safe default whenever the sheet is thinner than the fastener would like.
