DIN 7504, 7505 and 7981: A Practical Standards Guide
What each standard actually fixes, where ISO and ASTM overlap, and why 'DIN equivalent' is not the same as DIN.
What a dimensional standard buys you
A standard fixes head diameter, head angle, thread pitch, core diameter and point geometry for each nominal size. The practical consequence is substitution: a contractor can change supplier without re-qualifying the fixing, because the screw that arrives will seat in the same hole, at the same depth, with the same driver.
DIN 7505 — chipboard screws
Covers countersunk chipboard screws in forms A and B, which differ in thread configuration and length of threaded shank. It is the standard European joinery and timber-frame contractors specify by name, and it is why a German kitchen fitter can open any compliant box and know how the screw will behave.
DIN 7504 — self-drilling screws
The European self-drilling family. Form K is the hex head member — the one most roofing specifications call up — and form N covers other head styles. Our roofing and self-drilling lines are produced against 7504K and 7504N.
DIN 7981 / 7982 / 7983 — tapping screws
The classic tapping screw series covering pan, countersunk and raised countersunk heads respectively. ISO 1481 and ISO 1482 are their ISO counterparts and are routinely quoted alongside.
ISO 15480 and ASTM C954
ISO 15480 covers hex washer head self-drilling screws; ASTM C954 is the North American specification for steel drill screws used with gypsum board and steel framing. A project governed by ASTM should be quoted against ASTM, not against a DIN part that happens to be similar.
'DIN equivalent' is a warning sign
It usually means the screw is dimensionally close but has not been produced or inspected against the standard. If compliance matters, ask for the dimensional inspection report — the document, not the claim. We issue lot-level dimensional data, mill test certificates and SGS reports on request.
Specifying without ambiguity
Name the standard, the nominal size, the head form, the drive and the finish. Five fields eliminate almost all of the back-and-forth in a fastener enquiry.
