Why it is built this way
Engineering notes
Electrical boxes, small enclosures and light framing all share a constraint: the hole is already in the part, and whatever goes into it must not stand proud enough to foul the cover. A pan framing head is the low-profile answer, with enough bearing area to clamp thin steel and little enough height to clear a lid.
Because it is a tapping rather than a drilling screw, the fabricator keeps control of hole size — punched, laser-cut or moulded in — and the screw simply forms its thread into what is already there.
