What makes this job different
Structural timber fasteners occupy a different world from joinery screws. At M6 to M20 and up to 200 mm long, they appear on engineers' connection details, they are installed with impact wrenches, and their failure is a structural event rather than a cosmetic one.

Problems we are asked to solve — and what fixes them
Splitting at large diameters
Above M12, pre-drilling in dense timber is usually required. The pilot diameter belongs in the engineer's detail, not in the installer's judgement.
Jacking the members apart
An unthreaded shank under the head lets the screw pull the members together instead of pushing them apart.
Cam-out on long drives
Peak torque arrives in the last section of a long screw. Torx transfers through six straight walls and will not slip.
Exposure in outdoor structures
Zinc plating is the standard finish; permanently exposed and coastal work should be reviewed before specification.
