Self-Drilling Screws: Matching Drill Point to Steel Thickness

Point geometry, flute length and the timing problem that decides whether a Tek screw fastens or jacks the sheets apart.

The drill point is not a sharpened cone

It is a machined cutting geometry with flutes, and it has two jobs: cut a hole slightly larger than the screw's core diameter, and evacuate the swarf before the first thread arrives. Both have to finish before threading starts.

The timing problem

If the point is still drilling when the thread engages, the screw starts pulling itself in against a hole that does not exist yet — and it jacks the two sheets apart instead of clamping them. If the flute is too short for the stack, it stops cutting, stops evacuating, and burns. Flute length is therefore matched to material thickness, not chosen for convenience.

Reading the capacity band

Our self-drilling family is rated for 1.5 – 5 mm of steel depending on the flute specified. That is a range across the family, not a promise from any single part — a short-flute #8 and a long-flute #14 sit at opposite ends of it. Send the actual stack-up thickness and the point gets matched rather than guessed.

Head selection follows the joint

Hex washer heads take a nut driver and give a wide bearing face on cladding and purlins. Pan and pan framing heads stay low where a panel passes over the fixing. Wafer and modified truss heads spread load on thin or perforated material. The drill point is the same engineering question; the head is a separate one.

When bi-metal is the right answer

A stainless screw cannot drill hardened steel — stainless is too soft at the point. Bi-metal construction solves it: an A2 stainless head and shank carrying a hardened carbon drill point, for exposed fixings that still have to make their own hole.

Practical checklist

Total steel thickness, number of sheets in the stack, head clearance under any overlying panel, drive tooling on site, and exposure class. Those five answers specify the screw.
