What this family is built for
This is the heavy end of the catalogue. Where a chipboard screw is measured in millimetres of diameter, a structural wood screw is specified like a bolt — M6 through M20, up to 200 mm long — and it is asked to carry shear and withdrawal loads in a timber connection rather than simply hold two panels together. The unthreaded shank under the head lets the screw pull the members tight instead of jacking them apart.
Drive choice follows the torque. An external hex head takes a socket and an impact wrench, which is what most timber-frame and post-and-beam crews already have on the deck. A hex flange head with an internal Torx recess is specified where cam-out has to be eliminated and the integral flange replaces a separate washer.
