The square recess is the North American answer to cam-out. A Robertson driver holds the screw on the bit without magnets and transfers torque through four flat faces instead of a tapered cross, which is why deck builders and cabinet installers who work one-handed on a ladder keep asking for it.

The secanting tip is the second half of the specification. Instead of a plain cone, the point is cut so the leading edge shears its own entry rather than wedging the fibres apart — useful in hardwood and in dense engineered panels where a conventional sharp point would split the material before the thread ever engaged.
