Why it is built this way
Engineering notes
Steel-stud framing has a clearance problem that timber framing does not: the board has to sit flat against the flange, and anything proud of that flange telegraphs through the finished wall. The pan framing head is cut for exactly that constraint — a low, slightly domed head with enough bearing area to hold track to stud, and little enough height to vanish under the board.
It is a stud-to-track fastener rather than a board fastener, which is why it is sold by the bucket to framing crews and almost never seen by anyone after the drywall goes up.
