Why it is built this way
Engineering notes
The modified truss head is what you reach for when the material under the head is the weak link. Its diameter is larger than a pan head and its profile is lower, so clamp load spreads across a wide bearing circle instead of concentrating at the edge of a small head — the failure mode that pulls a screw straight through thin sheet or board.
Combined with a self-drilling point it becomes the standard fixing for lath, mesh, thin cladding and sheathing over steel: one pass, no pilot, and a head that will not disappear into the material it is supposed to be holding.
