Why it is built this way

Once the stud gauge gets heavy enough, a sharp point stops being a point and starts being a problem: it work-hardens the steel, wanders off the mark and eventually snaps. The self-drilling variant replaces it with a miniature drill tip that cuts a clean hole first and lets the thread follow into it.

The engineering trick is timing. The tip has to finish its hole before the first thread arrives, in a screw that is only a few millimetres across — which is why the drill geometry and the heat-treatment case depth on this variant are controlled more tightly than on the sharp-point lines.
