Why it is built this way
Engineering notes
Grey phosphate is the same manganese-family conversion coating as black, processed to a lighter finish. Functionally it does what black phosphate does — cuts drive friction, holds joint compound, gives modest protection in a dry interior — but it reads differently on site.
That difference is the point. Contractors who run two thread pitches on the same job use finish as the sorting mechanism: grey in one bucket, black in the other, and nobody has to squint at a thread count on a scaffold. Several markets have standardised on grey for exactly this reason, and we run it as a stock finish rather than a special.
