Why it is built this way
Engineering notes
In dense MDF a plain countersunk head behaves badly: it keeps sinking. The board offers so little resistance under the cone that the head buries itself and tears a crater in the face, and the joint loses clamp exactly where it needed it. The double countersunk profile adds a second, shallower bearing step above the cone, and that step is what stops the descent.
The result is a head that seats flush and then stays there, which matters on visible furniture faces and on any panel that will later be edge-banded or lacquered. The thread and point are shared with the rest of the chipboard family, so pull-out performance is unchanged.
