ST mounts a 2.5 mm ferrule in a bayonet coupling that locks with a quarter turn against a spring. It remains common in installed multimode building backbones and in industrial or campus networks that were cabled before SC and LC took over.
Multimode fiber carries many modes in a 50 or 62.5 µm core, which makes alignment and coupling far more forgiving over short distances. Use it inside buildings, data halls and campus backbones where reach is short and low-cost VCSEL transceivers do the work.
PC is the baseline physical-contact polish, with a lighter dome than UPC. It appears on older plant and on multimode links where return loss is not the limiting factor.
