Campus Backbone Connector Migration
Phasing a legacy ST or FC estate onto SC and LC equipment without cutting anything
Background
A campus or building backbone cabled to an older connector standard, now facing equipment that presents SC or LC ports. This is an engineering profile of how the catalog supports such a migration rather than a record of a named project.
The Challenge
The installed plant is fine. The equipment that has to attach to it is not compatible. Recabling is expensive and disruptive, and a migration that cannot be reversed halfway is a migration nobody will approve.
Pain Points
- Equipment ports and installed plant on different connector standards
- Test sets that cannot reach the ports they need to measure
- Core size mismatch risk when 62.5/125 plant meets 50/125 equipment
- Purpose-built converter cords ordered for what is really a temporary need
- No reversible intermediate state during the cutover
How It Is Built
Hybrid adapters bridge the two standards at the frame, so nothing is cut and the change is reversible at any point. Converter assemblies are used where a permanent transition is wanted, and core size is kept consistent end to end by physically separating and labeling the two multimode stocks.
Manufacturing and Preparation
- Hybrid adapters selected by connector pair and gender for the specific transition
- Alignment sleeve matched to the smaller of the two ferrules
- Concentricity verified against both parent connector standards
- Converter assemblies built to length where a permanent transition is specified
- Kits assembled for field engineering bags including cleaning tools
Supply Chain Coordination
Hybrid parts, new-standard cords, cleaning consumables and test tooling ship on one order, so the migration kit is complete on the first visit.
Quality Control
Insertion loss is measured with reference cords on both sides of hybrid parts, mating force and retention are sampled, and both interfaces are inspected before capping.
Result
A backbone that serves both connector generations during the transition, with every step reversible and every added mated pair accounted for in the link budget.
Customer Benefit
Equipment can be refreshed on its own schedule instead of waiting for a recabling project.
