Woven finishing is where clip stentering still earns its place. The clip requires a specific edge, preferably a selvedge, to grip, and is usually confined to woven fabrics, which is exactly what a woven line has. Where speed matters more than a mark-free selvedge, the same frames run pin.
Clip stenters leave no pin marks in the selvedge, which matters on articles where the edge is visible in the made-up product. A worn clip that no longer closes fully undoes that advantage without any obvious mechanical failure.
Pinning increases the tension you can hold on the fabric, so the cloth runs faster, up to 100 m per minute. The trade is pinholes in the selvedge, which most customers accept on pin stentered goods but not on all articles.
A commission finisher rarely knows next month's article mix. Changing a bed between pin and clip costs a shift, and holding two complete bed specifications costs store space and capital.
