M2 High Speed Steel for Drills Taps and Cutters

Universal tungsten molybdenum tool steel for cutting tools and cold work tooling

M2 is the workhorse high speed steel of the tool room, a conventionally manufactured medium alloy grade that suits tools of almost any kind. Cutting tool plants, sharpening shops and die makers order it under M2, 1.3343, HS6-5-2, SKH51, P6M5, W6Cr5Mo4V2 or S600, whichever designation their standard uses. Ordering it cut to blank size in the annealed condition takes the sawing, squaring and stock holding out of the tool making sequence, which matters when each tool order is a handful of pieces. It leaves the mill at a delivery hardness of at or below 260HB and takes a treated hardness of up to 65Hrc.

Why It Is Specified

Key Benefits of M2 high speed steel

Universally Applicable Across Tool Types

The same stock covers twist drills, taps, milling cutters, saws and knives as well as cold work punches and dies. A shop that carries M2 can quote most tool jobs without a separate material inquiry.

Soft Enough to Cut Before Hardening

At a delivery hardness of at or below 260HB the blank is sawn, turned and milled with ordinary shop tooling, and the hard finish is left to the heat treatment stage.

Treated Hardness Up to 65Hrc

Heat treatment takes the tool to a hardness of up to 65Hrc, which is where a cutting edge resists both abrasion and edge rollover in production cutting.

Wear Resistance From Tungsten and Molybdenum Carbides

Tungsten at 5.50-6.75 and molybdenum at 4.5-5.50 form the carbide structure that carries the abrasion on the cutting face.

Stock Ready for the Machining Center

Material can arrive as raw stock, milled or ground, so the first setup is the tool geometry rather than squaring a rough blank.

Repeatable Regrind Life

Because the composition is consistent through the section, a tool ground back for the fifth time behaves like the tool did when it was new.

Problems It Solves

What This Material Removes From Your Process

Waiting on a Mill Order for a Few Blanks

Tool orders are often small, and a full length purchase ties up cash and rack space. Cut to size supply matches the material quantity to the tool order.

Edges Failing Early in Production Cutting

A tool that softens or wears at the edge has to be pulled and reground more often than planned. The balance of toughness, wear resistance and red hardness in this grade extends the interval between regrinds.

Squaring Rough Stock Before Real Work Starts

Facing and squaring saw cut stock burns machine hours on a job that has not started. Milled or ground surface supply removes that operation.

Sourcing Against an Unfamiliar Grade Designation

Drawings arrive calling SKH51, HS6-5-2 or W6Cr5Mo4V2. All of them are filled from the same M2 stock.

Application Scenarios

Where It Is Used

High Volume Drill and Tap Production

Blank stock fed into flute grinding lines for twist drills and taps that have to hold size across a long run.

Milling Cutter and decoiling Saw Bodies

Cutter bodies and decoiling saws used in high speed light cut work where the edge runs hot for most of the cycle.

Cold Work Punch and Die Sets

Blanking and piercing tooling where the working face wears against sheet stock rather than against a hot chip.

Knife and Blade Sharpening Shops

Replacement blades and knives remade in a service shop from stock held for quick turnaround.

Maintenance Tooling for Production Lines

Punches, formers and cutting inserts remade in house so a line can restart without waiting on an outside supplier.

Tool Steel Distribution and Cutting Service

Stockists holding plate and bar in M2 and cutting it down for regional machine shops.

Manufacturing

How It Is Made and Processed

  1. Steel making and hot working to bar or plate

  2. Annealing to bring the stock to a machinable delivery condition

  3. Sawing and cutting to the ordered blank dimensions

  4. Milling or grinding the faces where that surface is ordered

  5. Optional quenching and tempering to the working hardness

  6. Dimensional and hardness check before packing

  7. Edge protection marking and export packing

Quality Control

Checks Before It Ships

  • Mill test certificate raised for the ordered grade and section
  • Delivery hardness confirmed at or below 260HB
  • Element ranges checked against the stated composition
  • Blank sizes measured against the customer cutting list
  • Milled and ground faces inspected before packing
  • Loading check for corrosion protection and crate condition

Comparison

M2 high speed steel Against the Alternatives

Plain carbon tool steelCarbon tool steel is cheaper to buy and to harden but gives up its edge as soon as the cut runs hot, which rules it out for powered cutting tools.
High vanadium powder metallurgy tool steelPowder grades give more wear resistance at a much higher material price, while conventionally manufactured M2 covers the general run of tools.
Solid carbide blanksCarbide cuts faster but is brittle in interrupted cuts and needs diamond grinding, whereas M2 blanks are machined soft and reground on conventional wheels.
Buying finished cutting toolsWorking from blank stock lets a tool room match geometry to the job and regrind the same tool, rather than replacing a bought tool each time it dulls.
Use Guide

Specifying Handling and Welding Notes

  • Do all heavy machining while the blank is still annealed and leave finish stock for grinding after hardening
  • Ramp the furnace in stages before the austenitizing soak because high alloy steel cracks under thermal shock
  • Run at least two tempers so retained austenite is transformed before the tool sees load
  • Grind wet and keep the wheel dressed so the finished edge does not pick up grinding burn
  • Order the surface milled or ground when your grinder is committed and the tool has to start on the mill
  • Ask for the mill test certificate so the composition is on file for the customer tool approval
Questions Buyers Ask

M2 high speed steel FAQ

How hard is M2 when it arrives and how hard can we take it?

It arrives annealed at a hardness of at or below 260HB for machining, and heat treatment takes it to at or below 65Hrc.

Our drawing says SKH51 rather than M2. Is that the same material?

It is. SKH51, HS6-5-2, 1.3343, P6M5, W6Cr5Mo4V2 and S600 all describe this tungsten molybdenum high speed steel.

Can you cut plate to the blank sizes on our tooling list?

Yes. Thickness covers 0-1000mm and size is customized, so send the list and the blanks are cut and marked before loading.

Do you supply ground stock or only black material?

Surface is available as raw material, milled or ground. Ground stock saves a setup where the blank goes straight to tool geometry machining.

Is M2 suitable for cold work punches or only for cutting tools?

It is used for cold work punches and dies alongside drills, taps, milling cutters, saws and knives, particularly on high speed light cut applications.

What packing do you use for tool steel blanks?

Blanks are protected at the edges and marked with grade and size before crating. Tell us if the material transships so the packing can be built for extra handling.

Can we order a trial piece before the full tooling package?

Samples are available. Confirm the section, surface condition and quantity you want to trial and we will advise what can be released.
