Quenched and tempered 690 MPa plate for boom arms lifting frames and welded structures
S690 is a high strength structural steel plate with a minimum yield strength of 690 MPa, where the S stands for structural and the 690 states the yield figure. Machine builders working on loaders, bulldozers, excavators and lifting equipment specify it when a welded structure has to carry more load without growing heavier. Designing at 690 MPa instead of a mild structural grade lets the section come down, which cuts plate weight, welding volume and counterweight on the finished machine. Plate is supplied in 0-100mm thickness in the Q+T, hot rolled or normalized condition and cut to the size on your drawing.
The minimum yield strength of 690 MPa is the whole reason to buy this grade. It lets a structural member carry the design load at a smaller section than a conventional structural plate.
A thinner section means less plate to buy, less weld metal to deposit and less mass for the machine to carry around. On mobile equipment that weight comes straight back as payload or fuel.
The European Chinese and material number designations for this strength level are supplied from the same material line, so a mixed drawing pack can be filled without splitting the purchase order.
Q+T, hot rolled and normalized conditions are available so the plate arrives in the state your welding and forming procedures were written for.
Bending, welding, decoiling, cutting and punching are done in house, so a boom side plate can arrive profiled and punched instead of as a rectangle you have to nest and burn.
Each shipment carries a mill test certificate against the ordered grade, which is what a structural inspector asks for when the plate goes into a load bearing weldment.
Adding thickness in a conventional grade adds mass everywhere it is added. A 690 MPa minimum yield lets the designer hold the load at a smaller section instead.
Thick plate means big weld preparations and many passes. Thinner high strength sections cut the deposited weld volume and the labor that goes with it.
One drawing writes S690, the next Q690, the next 1.8931. All four designations are supplied from one line so nothing has to be re sourced per project.
Cutting punching and bending are available before shipment, so plate arrives closer to the finished part and your burning table is freed up.
The mill test certificate ships with the plate so the structural file is complete when the weldment is signed off.
Boom and arm side plates, bosses and dipper bodies where the section has to carry digging loads without becoming heavier.
Track frames, push arms and blade backing structures taking high bending loads in a compact envelope.
Telescopic sections and lattice members where reducing dead weight directly increases what the machine can lift.
Chassis, frames and support structures on mining equipment that are welded heavy and loaded hard.
Large welded structural components in shipbuilding and bridge work where high strength plate lets spans and sections be optimized.
Power station equipment, medium and high pressure boilers and high pressure vessels along with locomotive and vehicle structures.

| Ordinary structural carbon steel plate | A minimum yield of 690 MPa allows a thinner section for the same load, so the finished weldment is lighter and uses less weld metal. |
|---|---|
| Thicker plate in a conventional structural grade | Adding thickness adds mass and weld preparation everywhere it is added, while the higher yield grade holds the load in a smaller section. |
| Abrasion resistant wear plate | S690 is bought for structural yield strength rather than surface hardness, so it belongs in the load bearing frame while wear plate goes on the contact face. |
| Stiffened built up sections in mild steel | A single high strength plate member replaces a stiffened mild steel build up, cutting the number of parts and welds in the assembly. |
The minimum yield strength is 690 MPa. The S denotes structural and the 690 is the yield figure in megapascals.
S690 Q690 E690 and 1.8931 all come from the same material line. Send the designation on your drawing and it will be matched.
Plate is supplied in 0-100mm and thinner sheet runs from 0.1mm-10mm. Size is customized, so parts can be cut rather than shipped as full plates.
Q+T, hot rolled and normalized conditions are all available. Tell us which one your welding and forming procedures were qualified for.
Yes. Bending, welding, decoiling, cutting and punching are offered, so plate can arrive profiled and punched to your drawing.
A mill test certificate is issued against the ordered grade and ships with the material. Ask for the mill test certificate when you place the order.
Samples are available. Confirm the grade, thickness and piece size you want to evaluate and we will tell you what can be released.
