Air or oil hardening tungsten tool steel listed as W18Cr4V T1 SKH2 2750 and HS 18-0-1
1.3355 is the tungsten type high speed steel known as W18Cr4V, T1, SKH2, 2750 and HS 18-0-1, an air or oil hardening tool steel with balanced hardness, strength, toughness and heat resistance. It is called out by makers of turning, planing and slotting instruments, taps, twist drills, threading dies, profile cutting instruments, broaches and reamers, and by tool rooms rebuilding older tooling designed around the tungsten grade rather than a molybdenum one. The usual procurement difficulty is that this grade appears on drawings under five different names and sits in fewer stocks than M2 or M35, so orders stall while equivalence is checked. Stock is held across 0-1000mm thickness and certified under all of those designations.
With tungsten at 17.50-18.50 this is the classic W18Cr4V composition. It is the right answer when an older drawing or an existing process was built around the tungsten grade.
The grade hardens in air or oil, which gives a heat treater a choice of quench severity and reduces the risk of cracking a long slender tool.
Hardness is stated as HRC62~66 alongside strength and toughness, so the tool resists both edge wear and the shock of an interrupted cut.
Heat resistance is one of the stated properties of this grade, which is why it survives long turning and planing passes where the edge never cools.
W18Cr4V T1 SKH2 2750 1.3355 and HS 18-0-1 all describe the same steel. Certifying against the name on your drawing avoids a hold at inspection.
Thickness reaches 1000mm and size is customized, so a heavy broach or form tool blank can be supplied without your shop sawing it down.
Many stockists carry only molybdenum high speed steels. Holding the W18Cr4V composition means a drawing written around the tungsten type does not have to be redrawn.
A severe quench distorts or cracks long thin tools. This grade hardens in air or oil so the heat treater can choose the gentler route.
T1 SKH2 2750 1.3355 HS 18-0-1 and W18Cr4V are one steel. The certificate can carry the designation your inspection department is looking for.
Cutting a large broach blank out of oversize stock eats machine hours. Thickness up to 1000mm with cut to size supply delivers the blank ready to machine.
Single point and form tools where the edge runs continuously and edge retention sets the time between regrinds.
Thread cutting tools where torque and abrasion act together and a broken tap costs more than the tool itself.
Drill manufacture on the tungsten grade, particularly where an existing product line was specified around W18Cr4V.
Long multi tooth tools that are expensive to regrind and depend on form holding across a production batch.
Profile and form cutting tools whose geometry must stay accurate through the whole run.

| M35 cobalt high speed steel | M35 is the molybdenum cobalt type. 1.3355 is the tungsten type at 17.50-18.50 W and is the grade to hold when the drawing specifies W18Cr4V. |
|---|---|
| Carbon tool steel | Carbon tool steel has no comparable heat resistance, so it cannot hold an edge in the continuous turning and planing duties this grade is used for. |
| Cemented carbide inserts | Inserts are indexed and thrown away. A W18Cr4V tool is reground repeatedly, which suits form tools and broaches that no insert geometry covers. |
Yes. W18Cr4V T1 SKH2 2750 1.3355 and HS 18-0-1 are designations for the same tungsten type high speed steel.
The hardness for this tool steel is stated as HRC62~66, together with strength toughness and heat resistance.
It is an air or oil hardening tool steel, so the heat treater can pick the quench severity that suits the section and shape.
Turning planing and slotting instruments, taps, twist drills, threading dies, profile cutting instruments, broaching instruments and reamers.
Thickness runs from 0-1000mm and size is customized, so heavy broach and form tool blanks can be cut for you.
Tungsten runs 17.50-18.50 with chromium 3.80-4.50, vanadium 1.00-1.20 and carbon 0.70-0.78.
Samples are available and a mill test certificate is issued for the ordered grade. Ask for the mill test certificate when you send the enquiry.
