Vanadium and molybdenum alloyed cold work die steel with stable size after hardening
1.2379 is a high carbon high chromium cold work die steel supplied for blanking and forming dies, forming rolls, press tools, punches, bits and bushes. It is specified by toolrooms and press shops that need wear resistance and dimensional stability from the same block, and it carries the equivalent callouts Cr12Mo1V1, D2, SKD11, X153CrMoV12 and X12M. Spheroidization annealing leaves the block soft enough to cut cleanly, so a die can be machined in the annealed state and then hardened without the size moving far enough to scrap the work. Thickness runs from 0-1000mm with the block cut to your size.
The steel contains vanadium and molybdenum, which is where its wear resistance comes from. After heat treatment it reaches high hardness and holds a cutting edge against sheet metal.
Spheroidization annealing softening treatment gives good cutting performance, so a complex die can be cut in the soft state rather than ground from hardened stock.
As a cold work die steel it is characterized by strong hardenability and stable size, so a die that is machined close to finish stays close to finish after heat treatment.
Vacuum degassing refining treatment makes the steel purer, which matters where a cutting edge has to survive millions of strokes without chipping at an inclusion.
High thermal stability and thermal fatigue resistance are stated advantages of the grade, along with high temperature strength and good toughness.
Cr12Mo1V1, D2, SKD11, X153CrMoV12 and X12M all describe this steel, so a die drawing from any market can be quoted without a substitution request.
Size change in heat treatment turns a finished die into a rework job. This grade is characterized by stable size, which is a large part of why it is chosen for close tolerance blanking work.
An inclusion at a working edge becomes the start of a chip after a few thousand strokes. Vacuum degassing refining treatment makes the steel purer and reduces that starting point.
Cutting a complex die out of hardened stock costs grinding hours. Spheroidization annealing gives good cutting performance so the profile is machined soft and hardened afterwards.
Wear resistance from the vanadium and molybdenum content stretches the run between regrinds on the same press job compared with a softer die steel.
Blocks are cut to the ordered size across the 0-1000mm thickness range, so you pay for the insert blank rather than the plate it came from.
The main duty of the grade, where the cutting edge has to hold clearance against sheet steel stroke after stroke.
Press tooling for stamping lines where wear on the working face decides how often the tool comes out for regrinding.
Small hardened working parts that see high contact stress and have to keep their diameter in service.
Roll forming tooling where the profile face is worn continuously by strip passing across it.
Trim steels and piercing inserts cut from thick blocks where the same wear and stability behaviour is needed.

| Pre-hardened plastic mold steel | 1.2379 is a cold work die steel for blanking and forming rather than a pre-hardened plastic mold grade, and is hardened after machining to reach its working hardness. |
|---|---|
| Oil hardening tool steel such as O1 | The vanadium and molybdenum content gives higher wear resistance and the grade is specified where strong hardenability and stable size are needed on larger dies. |
| High speed steel for punches | Cold work die steel is the normal choice for blanking and forming tooling at press temperatures, where high speed steel is aimed at cutting tools running hot. |
| Hardfaced mild steel tooling | A solid 1.2379 block hardens through to a uniform structure instead of relying on a deposited layer that has to be reapplied when it wears through. |
Yes. This material is supplied under 1.2379, Cr12Mo1V1, D2, SKD11, X153CrMoV12 and X12M. Quote the designation on your drawing and we will supply against it.
Thickness covers 0-1000mm and size is customized, so insert blanks can be cut to your list rather than shipped as full plate.
After spheroidization annealing softening treatment it has good cutting performance, which is why dies are normally cut in the annealed condition and hardened afterwards.
As a cold work die steel it is characterized by strong hardenability and stable size, which is the reason it is used for close tolerance blanking and forming dies.
Vacuum degassing refining treatment is used to make the steel purer, reducing the inclusions where a working edge would start to chip.
Both conditions are available. State which one your toolroom wants and it will be confirmed on the order and on the certificate.
Samples are available. Send the section size you want to machine and harden in your own shop and we will confirm what can be released.
