Rubber Lobe Pumps

KRL Rubber Lobe Pump

A compact lobe pump with rubber covered rotors, built to pass lumps, fibre and hair instead of blocking on them.

Overview

What This Pump Does

The KRL rubber lobe pump is a positive displacement pump for wastewater, chemical and oil duty. The body can be cast iron or stainless steel and the rotors are covered with rubber, which is what lets the pump handle liquid carrying solids without damaging itself.

Large bucket geometry and a short passage through the pump give smooth transfer of the pumped fluid, and the pump can run reversed without restriction.

  • Rubber covered lobe rotors
  • Cast iron or stainless steel body
  • Reversible operation without restriction
  • Self priming to a maximum of 8.5 m

Key Benefits

What The Design Is Built Around

Compact For The Output

High performance in a compact design, taking between a quarter and two thirds of the floor area a normal screw pump needs.

Maintenance In Place

Wear parts are replaced in situ by service personnel without dismantling the piping or lifting the machine.

Does Not Block

Mixed gas, liquid, particles, big lumps, fibre and hair pass through the pump.

Strong Self Priming

Self priming capacity to a maximum of 8.5 metres, so the pump can draw from a sump below floor level.

Application Scenarios

Where It Is Installed

Wastewater Transfer

Moving screened sewage and sludge that would wrap around an impeller.

Chemical And Oil Duty

Transfer duties in chemical and oil service where solids are part of the liquid.

Gas Liquid Mixtures

Liquids carrying entrained gas that cause a centrifugal pump to lose prime.

Who It Is For

  • Wastewater treatment works
  • Industrial plants with solid laden effluent
  • Chemical and oil operations
  • Maintenance teams that service pumps in place

Problems It Solves

Downtime for pump maintenance

In place replacement of wear parts means a change fits inside a shutdown window instead of extending it.

Blockages on fibre and rag

The short wide flow path and reversible operation clear what would stop other pumps.

Not enough floor space

A far smaller footprint than a screw pump of similar output.

Materials And Process

What Goes Into Every Unit

Materials

  • Cast iron body for general duty
  • Stainless steel body for corrosive service
  • Rubber covered rotors
  • Wear plates as replaceable items

Manufacturing And Assembly

  • Body casting and machining
  • Rotor covering and fitting
  • Assembly and clearance setting
  • Test and packing with documentation

Quality Control

  • Rotor clearances set and checked
  • Running test before dispatch
  • Factory acceptance test record with the order

Customization Options

  • Cast iron or stainless body
  • Drive and speed to suit the duty
  • Connection sizes and orientation
  • Spare wear part sets supplied with the pump

Compared With Other Options

Progressing cavity pumpThe screw pump gives smoother flow at higher viscosity. The lobe pump takes far less space and its wear parts change faster.
Centrifugal sludge pumpA centrifugal pump is cheaper but blocks on rag and loses prime on gassy liquid.

Use Guide

Installing And Servicing A Lobe Pump

Leave Cover Access

Plan space at the cover end so rotors and wear plates can be changed in place.

Protect Against Over Pressure

A positive displacement pump builds pressure against a closed valve, so fit relief or an interlock.

Check The Sealing Cavity

Keep the separated sealing cavity wetted as designed, since it protects the seal faces.

Change Wear Parts As A Set

Replace rotors and wear plates together so clearances stay correct.

Answers

KRL Rubber Lobe Pump FAQ

What can this pump handle?

Mixed gas, liquid and particles, including big lumps, fibre and hair, in wastewater, chemical and oil service.

How much suction lift?

Self priming capacity to a maximum of 8.5 metres, less on long or restricted suction lines.

Can it run in reverse?

Yes, operation is reversible without restriction, which is useful for clearing and emptying.

How is it maintained?

Wear parts are replaced in place without dismantling the piping or lifting the machine.

Which body material should I choose?

Cast iron for general sludge, stainless steel where the liquid is corrosive. Rotors are rubber covered in both cases.
