FC uses a 2.5 mm zirconia ceramic ferrule inside a threaded metal coupling nut, so the mated pair is locked mechanically rather than held by a spring latch. FC needs the alignment key to seat in the adapter slot before the nut is tightened. Cross-threading a keyed FC is the single most common cause of high loss on an FC link.

On the other face it mates to SC (Subscriber Connector). SC pairs a 2.5 mm ferrule with a square push-pull housing that clicks into the adapter and releases by pulling the body straight back.
