Stainless steel coil is a ferrous alloy strip containing a minimum of approximately 11% chromium, which is the composition that stops the iron rusting and also gives the material heat resistant properties. Grades run from 201 through 304 310 316 409 410 420 and 430, so an austenitic grade for a wet food line and a hardenable martensitic grade for a blade edge come off the same order. Specifying Handling and Welding Notes
- Choose 316 over 304 where chloride or salt exposure is expected and keep 201 for dry interior work
- Select the finish at the order stage because polishing a formed part costs more than buying the finish on the coil
- Use the hardenable 410 and 420 grades where an edge or a wear face has to be heat treated after forming
- Keep stainless away from carbon steel tooling grinding dust and storage racks to avoid iron contamination on the finished surface
- Leave the protective interleaving in place until the part is formed to protect BA HL and 8K surfaces
- Ask for the mill test certificate with the shipment so the grade and chemistry are on record for the food or chemical duty
