Large Diameter SSAW Spiral Welded Steel Pipe

Spiral submerged arc welded pipe for large bore water lines piling and construction

SSAW pipe is spiral submerged arc welded steel pipe, formed by coiling strip into a helix and welding the spiral seam from both sides. Water authorities, piling contractors and civil EPC buyers specify it for low pressure transport of water, gas and oil and for construction and piping work where the bore is too large for a longitudinally welded body. Forming from coil rather than plate is what makes diameters up to 3048mm and joint lengths up to 70 M reachable without a plate mill of matching width. The spiral seam is X-ray checked and each length is hydrostatically tested before dispatch.

Why It Is Specified

Key Benefits of Spiral Submerged-Arc Welded Steel Pipe

Diameter Range Beyond Longitudinal Welded Pipe

Outside diameter runs from 219.1 mm to 3048mm, which covers bores that no electric resistance welded mill can form. Trunk mains and large culverts come from one route.

Joint Lengths up to 70 M

Lengths from 3 to 70 M cut the number of field welds on a long run, which is where lay rate and inspection cost usually sit.

Spiral Seam Checked by X-ray

The submerged arc seam is examined by X-ray test alongside hydrostatic testing, so the weld along the helix is documented rather than assumed.

Piling and Pressure Grades from One Mill

ASTM A252 GR 1, GR 2 and GR 3 for piling sit next to the EN S275 and S355 pressure grades, so a project with foundation piles and water main can be filled together.

Coating Applied to the Route Conditions

Fusion bond epoxy, coal tar epoxy, 3PE, vanish, bitumen or black oil coating is applied to the customer requirement before the pipe reaches the site.

Wall Band Suited to Buried Service

Wall thickness from 4mm to 30mm lets a thin wall carry a gravity water line while a heavier wall takes the driving load on a pile.

Problems It Solves

What This Material Removes From Your Process

Bore Larger Than Any Longitudinal Mill Can Roll

Above the largest longitudinally welded bore a straight seam body is not available. Spiral forming from coil reaches 3048mm without waiting for plate of matching width.

Field Weld Count Driving the Programme

Every joint means a welder, an inspection and a coating repair. Lengths up to 70 M reduce the number of joints across the same route.

Piling and Pipeline Bought Separately

Foundation piles and water main are often split between suppliers. ASTM A252 piling grades and API 5L pressure grades are both covered here.

Spiral Seam Quality Taken on Trust

The helical seam is the natural concern with SSAW. X-ray testing, metallographic examination and a hydrostatic test put the result on the certificate.

Coating Arranged After Delivery

Coating a large diameter pipe on site is slow. The chosen system is applied as per customer requirement before loading.

Application Scenarios

Where It Is Used

Large Bore Water Transmission Mains

Trunk mains carrying water at low pressure where the required bore sits above what longitudinally welded pipe covers economically.

Foundation and Marine Piling

Driven pipe piles ordered to ASTM A252 GR 1, GR 2 and GR 3 for building foundations, jetties and bridge supports.

Gas and Oil Transfer Lines

Low pressure gas and oil runs certified to API 5L PSL1 or PSL2 where a spiral body is accepted for the duty.

Construction and Structural Piping

Columns, caissons and heavy structural tubes on civil works using BS 4360 Grade 43 and Grade 50 or EN S355 grades.

Culverts and Drainage Crossings

Large diameter drainage and culvert sections where lengths toward 70 M reduce the number of joints in the crossing.

Power Plant Circulating Water Lines

Cooling and circulating water runs at plant scale where diameters approach the 3048mm end of the range.

Spiral Submerged-Arc Welded Steel Pipe Against the Alternatives

ERW longitudinally welded pipeSpiral forming reaches 3048mm outside diameter where the longitudinal route runs out of bore, and joint lengths run to 70 M.
Longitudinal submerged arc welded pipe from plateSpiral pipe is formed from coil, so diameter is not limited by the width of plate a mill can roll.
Reinforced concrete pipeA steel body can be welded joint to joint into a continuous line and takes driving load when the same section is used as a pile.
H section pilesA tubular pile gives the same section modulus in every direction and can be filled with concrete after driving.
Use Guide

Specifying Handling and Welding Notes

  • Fix the required bore first because diameter drives the whole cost on a line between 219.1 mm and 3048mm
  • Choose wall thickness from the 4mm to 30mm band against internal pressure for a main and against driving energy for a pile
  • Check the transport route and lifting capacity before ordering toward the 70 M length limit
  • Specify the end preparation you want so field welding starts without re beveling on site
  • Support large diameter pipe on shaped cradles during storage so the section stays round
  • Ask for the X-ray and hydrostatic records with the certificate so the seam evidence is on file
Questions Buyers Ask

Spiral Submerged-Arc Welded Steel Pipe FAQ

How large a diameter can you make in spiral pipe?

Outside diameter runs from 219.1 mm up to 3048mm. Confirm the bore and the design pressure and we will come back with the wall thickness.

What length can a single joint be?

Joint length runs from 3 to 70 M. Longer joints cut the number of field welds but check your transport and lifting limits first.

Is the spiral seam X-ray tested?

Yes. X-ray testing is carried out on the seam along with a metallographic test, bending, Charpy-V impact and a hydrostatic test.

Can you supply pipe piles to ASTM A252?

ASTM A252 GR 1, GR 2 and GR 3 are all listed for this pipe. Tell us the pile diameter, wall and driven length required.

Do you have API 5L certification for this pipe?

Certificates cover API 5L PSL1 and PSL2 as well as API 5CT, EN10217 and EN10219. State which one the project specification calls for.

What coatings are available on large diameter pipe?

Fusion bond epoxy, coal tar epoxy, 3PE, vanish coating, bitumen coating and black oil coating are applied as per customer requirement.

How is pipe this size shipped?

Pipe is marked and stacked for loading with the joint length agreed against the vessel and the discharge port. Send the port details and we will plan the stow.
