The China Import and Export Fair โ better known as the Canton Fair โ is held twice a year at the China Import and Export Fair Complex in the Pazhou area of Guangzhou. If you have ever asked what is the Canton Fair in practical terms, the short answer is: the largest single place where Chinese manufacturers and exporters meet overseas buyers face to face, split into product-based phases each spring and autumn.
Search for Canton Fair China Guangzhou and you will find dates, hotel offers and floor plans. What is harder to find is a Canton Fair buyer guide focused on the step that decides whether the trip pays off: checking the companies behind the booths. That is what this article covers.
Scale is exactly the problem. A buyer who walks the halls without a plan collects catalogues from companies that look identical on a booth fascia but are very different behind it: some own the production line, some are trading companies with a showroom, and some are one-person resellers who rented a stand. This guide is written from the perspective of a supplier directory โ how to use the fair to verify suppliers, not just to find them.

Before you fly: build a shortlist you can actually check
Most of the value of a Canton Fair trip is created before you leave home. Start from your product, not from the exhibitor list.
1. Match your product to the right phase
Each session is divided into phases by industry โ broadly heavy and electrical goods first, home and gift categories in the middle, and consumer goods such as toys, textiles and health products at the end. Phase allocation changes between sessions, so confirm the current schedule on the official site, cantonfair.org.cn, before you book hotels. Our sister site CifyChina has a phase-by-phase planner for the autumn 2026 session; here we focus on what to do once you know your phase.
2. Look each exhibitor up before the show
For every company on your list, gather three things: the legal company name in Chinese and English, the registered address, and the company's own website domain. Then check whether the same company appears in an independent source โ for example the weisourcing supplier directory, where each listing records the supplier's own domain and published product scope. A company that publishes its actual process (injection moulding, CNC turning, weaving) usually runs it; one that only lists finished products across unrelated categories is more likely trading.
3. Send a real RFQ in advance
Email or message your top ten a short request for quotation with your drawing or reference sample, target quantity and destination. Their replies tell you more than any booth conversation: who answers in 24 hours, who asks sensible technical questions, and who sends a generic price list. Book booth meetings with the ones who engage.
Buyer tip
Bring your RFQ on a single printed page and as a PDF on your phone. Sales staff at busy booths rotate, and a written spec avoids having the same conversation three times.
At the booth: questions that separate factories from traders
A trading company is not automatically a bad partner โ for mixed containers or small orders it can be the better choice. What matters is knowing which one you are talking to, because it changes who controls quality, lead time and price.
| Ask this | What a manufacturer usually says | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Where is your factory, and can I visit next week? | A specific address in an industrial district, often outside Guangzhou | โOur factory is far awayโ with no address |
| Which processes do you do in-house? | Names machines and steps; outsourced steps are admitted openly | โWe can do everythingโ |
| What is your MOQ for this item, and why? | MOQ tied to material, mould or colour runs | Same MOQ for every product in the catalogue |
| Who are your main export markets? | Specific countries, certifications held for them | Vague answers, no certificates on hand |
| Can the sample be made to my drawing? | Quotes a sample fee and a realistic sample time | Only offers catalogue stock |
Document everything
Photograph the booth sign (showing the company name), the samples you handle, product labels and carton markings. Ask for a business card that shows a company domain email rather than a free webmail address. These small details make the post-fair verification step much faster.
Do not negotiate price at the booth
Prices quoted on the floor are often indicative and assume the supplier's standard materials and packaging. Collect specifications and MOQ now, and compare prices later on the same basis โ same spec, same Incoterm, same packaging. Our guide to OEM vs ODM, MOQ and AQL lists the terms to pin down before any price is meaningful.
After the fair: verify before you pay a deposit
The two weeks after the show are when most buying mistakes happen, because enthusiasm is high and follow-up is rushed. Work through this list for every supplier you are serious about.
- Check the business licence. Ask for a scan and confirm the company name matches the one on the proforma invoice and bank account.
- Compare like-for-like quotes. Put three suppliers side by side on identical specifications and the same delivery term.
- Order pre-production samples. Test them against your spec โ not the booth sample, which may have been hand-picked.
- Visit or audit. Many factories in the Pearl River Delta can be reached from Guangzhou the same day. If you cannot stay, a third-party factory audit is a reasonable cost for any order with tooling.
- Agree inspection and payment milestones in writing before the deposit is sent.
Common trap
A supplier asks you to pay the deposit to a different company name or a personal account โfor faster processingโ. Do not proceed until the beneficiary matches the contracting company.
Beyond the halls: using the fair as a starting point
The Canton Fair Guangzhou sessions are a snapshot, not the whole market. Guangzhou itself is a large manufacturing and wholesale centre, and many of the factories in Guangzhou and the surrounding cities of Foshan, Dongguan and Shenzhen exhibit. But plenty of capable manufacturers never take a booth. Treat the fair as one input: use what you learned about pricing, materials and MOQs to brief suppliers you find elsewhere, including the categories on our supplier directory homepage and the worked examples in our real inquiry articles.
If the fair has left you with more candidates than you can check, read how to find a supplier in China for when a sourcing agent is worth adding to the process. And once your supplier is chosen, our pre-shipment checklist for shipping from China to the USA covers the next stage.
