Ceramic to Metal Metallizing and Brazing
Brazing a ceramic to a metal flange is not a brazing problem, it is a metallizing problem. When the joint leaks, the cause is almost always the metallized layer rather than the alloy. Here is how the joint is built and controlled.
The Route From Enquiry to Delivery
1. Joint Design
The metallized band position and width are defined on the drawing, alongside the ceramic dimensions, because the band is what actually carries the joint.
2. Body Choice
95% or 96% alumina for general work, AlN or BeO substrates where the joint also has to move heat.
3. Mo Mn Metallizing
A molybdenum manganese layer is applied at 25 plus or minus 10 microns and fired onto the ceramic surface.
4. Plating
Nickel at 2 to 10 microns as standard, with copper, gold or silver available to suit your braze alloy.
5. Brazing
Metallization and brazing are both available here, so the joint is not split between two suppliers.
6. Verification
Pin pull strength averages 4200 kgf/cm2 measured on a 3.0 mm diameter pin, and layer thickness is checked against the specified windows.

Ceramic to Metal Metallizing and Brazing FAQ
Why will my ceramic not wet with braze alloy?
Bare ceramic does not wet. It needs a fired Mo Mn metallized layer with a plated finish before any braze alloy is applied.
What pull strength does the joint reach?
An average of 4200 kgf/cm2 measured on a 3.0 mm diameter pin.
Can you supply the finished brazed assembly?
Yes. Metallization and brazing are both possible across a wide range of sizes and shapes.
