Zirconia Ceramic Plungers and Pump Shafts
Plungers that keep their diameter in abrasive and corrosive dosing duty
A metering plunger fails in one of two ways: the surface scores and the dose drifts, or the shaft corrodes where it passes the seal. Zirconia ceramic plungers remove both failure modes. The body is sintered zirconia at 6.0 g/cm3 with 800 MPa flexural strength, ground and polished to a smooth running surface, and supplied either as a plain rod or bonded to a metal driving end.
Key Benefits
- 800 MPa flexural strength gives zirconia the toughness to work as a slender driven shaft
- Hardness of 8.2 on the Mohs scale means the sealing surface does not score against packing
- Non-magnetic and corrosion resistant, so the plunger suits chemical and food dosing lines
- Low thermal conductivity keeps process heat out of the drive end
- A polished surface finish lowers friction against the seal and extends packing life
Problems It Solves
- Dose accuracy drifting as a hardened steel plunger wears out of round
- Pitting and seizure on plungers running in corrosive or chloride bearing fluids
- Frequent packing changes caused by a rough or galling shaft surface
Who It Is For
- Dosing pump manufacturers whose warranty claims come from plunger wear
- Machine builders replacing hard chrome shafts that keep coming back for regrind
- Maintenance buyers looking for a drop in replacement for an existing plunger
Application Scenarios
High pressure metering and dosing pumps
Mechanical plunger dispensing valves
Ceramic shafts and guide rails on precision machinery
Petroleum and chemical transfer duty

Comparison With Other Ceramics
Alumina is cheaper and harder but far less tough, so a slender alumina plunger is easy to snap in service. Zirconia trades some hardness for the 800 MPa strength that a driven shaft needs, which is why it is the default ceramic for plunger duty.
Use Guide
- Give the seal bore diameter as well as the plunger diameter so the running clearance is right
- Avoid side loading; align the drive before the plunger enters the packing
- Tell us the end fitting style if the plunger has to mate with an existing crosshead

Zirconia Ceramic Plungers FAQ
Can the plunger be supplied with a metal end already fitted?
Yes. Plungers are supplied as plain ceramic rod or bonded to a metal driving end. Send the mating dimensions with your drawing.
How strong is the ceramic in bending?
Flexural strength is 800 MPa at a density of 6.0 g/cm3.
Is the plunger magnetic?
No. Zirconia is non-magnetic, which is why it is used in instrument and dosing duty.
Can you copy an existing plunger?
Yes. Our main business is OEM and ODM. Send the drawing or the worn sample and the dimensions you need held.
What is the delivery time?
Samples in 4 to 7 working days. Production is 15 to 30 days when not in stock, depending on dimension and quantity.
Do you inspect to my drawing?
Yes. Products are inspected to your drawing and an inspection report is issued.
