Shackles FAQ
What does WLL mean on a shackle?
Working Load Limit is the maximum working load the manufacturer designed the shackle for. It is far below the force needed to make the shackle yield or fail, and it is calculated by dividing the minimum breaking load by the design factor.
What is the difference between MBL and the safety factor?
Minimum breaking load is the least force the shackle must withstand before breaking. The safety factor is the ratio of that minimum breaking load to the working load limit, so the two figures always have to be read together.
How do I read a shackle size?
By the diameter of the bow section, not the pin size. Each bow diameter has a corresponding working load limit, normally stated in tonnes on the product page and stamped on the bow itself.
Which surface finish should I choose?
Hot dip galvanised for coastal, marine and outdoor service, because the zinc layer is thick and the corrosion resistance is strong, though it costs more. Electro-galvanised for dry indoor duty at a lower price with a thinner layer. Plastic spraying where you want a colour.
Do you supply certificates with shackles?
Yes. A Material Test Certificate to EN 10204 3.1 is issued with the batch on request, and every batch is proof load tested with dimensional and breaking strength records kept.
