Side Trimmers and Circle Shears For Strip Edge Preparation

Equipment that removes defective strip edges so width stays constant and cracks never reach the next process.

Rolling leaves small edge defects. Left in place they propagate and the strip breaks downstream, usually at the worst possible moment in the line.

Who Buys Side Trimmers

Who needs edge trimming.

  • Slitting line operators
  • Pickling lines handling high value grades such as HiB silicon steel
  • Service centres recovering damaged coil edges
  • Plants standardising strip width before further processing
  • Edge cracks causing strip breaks downstream
  • Width variation along the coil
  • Torn rather than sheared edges on thin gauge
  • Slow, imprecise width changeover

Why Plants Source Side Trimmers From Ascon

What the machines share.

Controlled Gap And Overlap

Two displacement and vertical circular blades work at a set gap and overlap so the edge fractures cleanly rather than tearing.

Servo Width Adjustment

Two oil cylinders with servo cylinder control set shearing width precisely and repeat it between coils.

Serviceable Blades

Double edged blades with end face grinding and hydraulic nut locking can be turned and reground instead of replaced.

Application Scenarios

Where they are installed.

Slitting Lines

Trimming both edges before the strip is slit into narrower coils.

Pickling Lines

Removing edge cracks from hot rolled or silicon steel before further processing.

Thin Gauge Lines

Circle shear configurations for strip down to 0.15 mm where edges tear easily.

FAQ

Side Trimmers Buying Questions

How much can you trim per side?

Our side trimmer configuration covers 3 mm to 50 mm per side, which handles both light dressing and full edge recovery.

How thin a strip can be trimmed?

Down to 0.15 mm with the circle shear configuration, and from 1.2 mm upward for hard grades such as HiB silicon steel.

How are blades maintained?

They are double edged with end face grinding and hydraulic nut locking, so they can be turned and reground rather than scrapped.

Do we need a scrap chopper as well?

In almost every case, yes. The trimmed edge has to be chopped and collected or it jams the chute and stops the line.

How is the width set?

Two oil cylinders drive the width adjustment with servo cylinder control, so the setting repeats between coils.

Can you supply blades afterwards?

Yes, blades and blade shafts for the machines we build are available as spares.
