Back Up Rolls For Leveling and Straightening Machines

The support side of the cassette, where rigidity comes from, and the first place to look when flatness will not hold.

New work rolls will not fix flatness if the back up rolls behind them are worn. Support geometry is what stops the work rolls deflecting under load.

Who Buys Back Up Rolls

Who buys back up rolls.

  • Plants where leveling precision is a delivery requirement
  • Maintenance stores holding support roll spares
  • Rebuild shops servicing leveler cassettes
  • Machine builders specifying complete roll systems
  • Work roll deflection from worn support rolls
  • Flatness varying between shifts
  • Shaft wear at the bearing interface
  • Short roll life under modern rolling loads

Why Plants Source Back Up Rolls From Ascon

Two decades on one component.

Deep Heat Treatment

Hardness runs deep into the body rather than sitting in a thin case, so the roll supports several regrinds.

Geometry In The 0.005 mm Class

Precision grinding to 0.005 mm class geometry with 0.2 micron surface finish keeps support even along the barrel.

Two Material Construction

GCr15 rolling surface on a carburized and quenched 20CrMnTi shaft at HRC 58-62 gives wear resistance and core toughness together.

Application Scenarios

Where they are fitted.

Tension Leveler Cassettes

Supporting work rolls in galvanizing, coating and processing line levelers.

Straightening Machines

In steel plant straightening equipment where flatness is the delivery specification.

Fast Galvanizing Lines

Continuous duty at line speed where wear resistance decides the service interval.

FAQ

Back Up Rolls Buying Questions

Why replace back up rolls at all?

They provide the rigidity behind the work rolls. Worn support rolls let the work rolls deflect, so flatness problems return quickly after a work roll change.

What material do you use?

High quality GCr15 for the rolling surface and 20CrMnTi for the shaft, carburized and quenched to HRC 58-62 surface hardness.

What sizes do you produce?

Defined sizes such as 74 by 192 mm, plus any dimension to your drawing or sample.

What accuracy do you grind to?

Geometry in the 0.005 mm class with surface finish around 0.2 micron.

How often should they be replaced?

Planned from tonnage and observed wear. We can advise an interval once we know the line duty and strip material.

Can you supply the whole roll system?

Yes, work rolls, intermediate rolls and back up rolls can be produced as a matched set.

Check The Support Side

Send your back up roll drawing or a photo of the worn roll and we quote a replacement set.
