Maintenance Guide

A Practical Maintenance Schedule for a Surface Grinder

Geometry is lost slowly, and always through something that was easy to check.

A grinder does not usually fail. It drifts, and the drift shows up as parts that need a second pass. Most of what causes it is on this list, and none of it takes long.

Every Day Before Work Starts

The daily checks are about contamination and lubrication, which are what damage ways and spindles.

  • Wipe the table and chuck clean, and check nothing is trapped under the workpiece
  • Check way lubrication is reaching the slides
  • Check coolant level, concentration and cleanliness
  • Confirm the wheel guard is secure and the wheel is undamaged
  • Listen to the spindle on startup before loading a part

Every Week

Weekly attention is about the systems that degrade quietly.

  • Clean the coolant tank and remove settled swarf
  • Check hydraulic oil level and look for leaks at fittings
  • Clean the way wipers so they are not carrying grit along the slides
  • Check the magnetic chuck surface for nicks and dress it if needed
  • Check that table traverse is smooth through the full stroke

Every Month

Monthly checks are the ones that catch a change before it becomes a fault.

  • Measure spindle run out and record it against previous readings
  • Check table parallelism to the spindle axis at both ends of travel
  • Verify that automatic feed increments match the setting
  • Inspect drive belts for tension and wear
  • Check electrical enclosures for dust build up

Every Six to Twelve Months

Annual work is where levelling and wear are addressed rather than monitored.

  • Re level the machine, particularly on a floor that has taken new equipment
  • Change hydraulic oil and clean the filter
  • Grind or regrind the magnetic chuck if the surface has worn
  • Inspect slideway condition and adjust gib settings
  • Review the machine against its original geometry figures

What to Record

Readings are only useful in a series. Spindle run out measured once means nothing, measured monthly it tells you when a bearing is going. Keep the numbers in a simple log against the machine serial number, and keep dressing and wheel changes in the same place so a change in finish can be traced to a cause rather than guessed at.

When to Call for Parts

Within the 12 month warranty, contact us with the model, serial number and a description of what changed. After the warranty period the same information gets you a parts quotation. Wheels, dressers, bearings, seals and control components stay available for the machines we build.

Questions

Questions From This Guide

How often should the machine be re levelled?

At least annually, and any time heavy equipment is installed nearby or the machine is moved.

What is the most commonly missed check?

Coolant condition. Weak or dirty coolant produces burn and poor finish on a machine that is mechanically fine.

Can I regrind the magnetic chuck myself?

Yes, on the machine, which is the usual practice. Take a light pass and confirm the chuck is energised during grinding.

Where do I get spare parts after the warranty ends?

Quote the model and serial number to us by WhatsApp or email and we ship against it.

Still Not Sure Which Way to Go

Send the part, the problem or the photograph. A specific question gets a specific answer, usually the same working day.
