Buying Guide

How to Choose a Surface Grinder for a Tool Room

Five specifications decide the machine. Everything else is detail.

Surface grinder selection goes wrong in one of two ways: buying more table than the parts need, or buying a machine that cannot clear the workpiece at the end of its stroke. Both are avoidable by working through five numbers before looking at any model.

Start With the Largest Part Not the Average One

Table size has to cover the biggest part you expect to grind, with clamping room around it. A 300 x 600 mm table handles most die plates and fixture bases. Once parts pass 600 mm, splitting them across two setups introduces a mismatch that no amount of care removes, and a 400 x 800 mm table becomes the answer rather than a luxury.

Check X Travel Against Part Length Not Table Length

The wheel has to run completely off both ends of the workpiece. A machine with 720 mm of X travel on a 600 mm table gives that clearance. If travel only just exceeds the table, the wheel dwells at the reversal point and leaves a burn mark at the edge of the part, which is the flaw people most often blame on the wheel.

Decide Whether Feed Should Be Manual or Automatic

Manual down feed is fine for one off work where an experienced operator is at the machine anyway. Repeat batches are a different problem: automatic down feed between 0.1 and 8 mm makes the cycle the same on the tenth part as on the first, and frees the operator to do something else while it runs.

  • Manual feed suits low volume, mixed work and a smaller budget
  • Automatic feed suits repeat batches and matched sets of plates
  • Servo vertical feed with 0.005 mm graduation suits finishing work where the last pass matters

Match Spindle Power to Wheel Width

A wider wheel contacting more of the part needs more power to hold speed. A 5 x 4 HP spindle suits a 300 mm wide table. Step to a 400 mm table and a 7.5 x 4 HP spindle is what keeps wheel speed stable under a deeper cut, rather than letting the wheel slow down and burn the surface.

Confirm Table Load and Floor Loading

Table load capacity of 600 kg covers most die shop work. The number people forget is machine weight: 1550 kg for an MY3060, 2200 kg for a 3060AHD and 2600 kg for a 4080AHD. Check the floor before the crate arrives, not after.

A Short Comparison

The three machines in the WUK surface grinding range differ on exactly these points, which makes the choice fairly mechanical once the part is known.

  • MY3060: 300 x 600 mm table, 550 mm stroke, manual down feed, 1550 kg
  • 3060AHD: 300 x 600 mm table, 720 mm X travel, automatic down feed, 2200 kg
  • 4080AHD: 400 x 800 mm table, 950 mm X travel, 7.5 x 4 HP spindle, 2600 kg

Questions

Questions From This Guide

Is a bigger table always better?

No. A larger machine costs more, weighs more and takes more floor. Buy the table your largest realistic part needs plus clamping room, not the largest table available.

How much X travel do I need?

Enough that the wheel clears both ends of the workpiece completely. On a 600 mm part, 720 mm of travel is comfortable.

Do I need automatic down feed?

If you run repeat batches or matched sets, yes. For occasional one off work, manual feed with an experienced operator is perfectly adequate.

What surface finish can a surface grinder reach?

The MY3060 is rated at Ra 0.32 micron. Achieved finish depends on wheel grade, dress condition, coolant and material more than on the machine badge.
