Cast trick plate units that guide and space the needles.
What This Part Does On The Machine
The trick plate carries the slots, or tricks, that hold the needles in line. It fixes the needle spacing across the width and keeps every needle square to the guide line, so the trick plate is what physically sets the gauge of the machine.
Trick plate wear opens the slot and the needle starts to move sideways. That shows as an irregular loop and, in the worst case, as a needle striking a guide. Trick plate units are cast in sections and replaced section by section.

Fit a new needle in the suspect slot with the machine stopped. If it still has sideways play, the slot is worn.
