Cast tongue units that close the needle hook.
What This Part Does On The Machine
On a compound needle machine the tongue rides in the needle groove and closes the hook at the moment the old loop is cast off. The tongues are cast into short units so a bar can be rebuilt section by section.
Tongue wear is gradual and shows first as an occasional dropped stitch on one repeat of the fabric width. Because the tongue works inside the needle groove, a tongue that is even slightly proud will also score the needle, so tongue units and needles are usually inspected together.
