Dicumyl peroxide white crystalline product sample
Organic Peroxides

Dicumyl Peroxide

Dicumyl peroxide is the rubber vulcanising agent and polyolefin crosslinker of the range, a white crystalline solid above 99% purity with a melting point of 39.5 °C. It is insoluble in water and soluble in ethanol, ether, acetic acid, benzene and petroleum ether, and it is also used as an initiator of styrene polymerisation. Produced at the Dakings Jinshan base.

CAS 80-43-3Formula C18H22O2MW 270.4
Key benefits

What You Get With This Grade

  • Purity above 99% with actual active oxygen above 5.86% against a theoretical 5.92%
  • Ten hour half-life temperature of 117 °C, matched to normal rubber cure windows
  • SADT of 75 °C with a 70 °C alarm temperature, the highest storage headroom of our three peroxides
  • Cartoned at 4x5 kg per bag so a bag equals a batch weigh-up and the drum never has to be decanted

Technical features

  • White crystalline substance, insoluble in water
  • Soluble in ethanol, ether, acetic acid, benzene and petroleum ether
  • Melting point 39.5 °C, density 1.1 g/cm³ at 20 °C
  • Decomposition products are methane, acetophenone and 2-phenylisopropanol
Application scenarios

Where Dicumyl Peroxide Is Used

Rubber vulcanisation

Used as the vulcanising agent that crosslinks the rubber network in hoses, seals, belts and moulded goods.

Polyolefin crosslinking

Crosslinks polyolefins in cable and pipe compounds where thermoset behaviour is needed from a thermoplastic base.

Styrene polymerisation

Acts as the initiator of styrene polymerisation where a solid peroxide is preferred to a liquid.

Tire compound curing

Peroxide cure for compounds where sulphur vulcanisation is not suitable.

Who it is for

Buyers This Grade Is Built For

  • Rubber goods manufacturers running peroxide cure systems
  • Cable and pipe compounders crosslinking polyolefins
  • Tire plants that also buy TDAE process oil and want both from one supplier
  • Plants that prefer a cartoned solid over liquid peroxide handling
Problems it solves

What It Stops Going Wrong

  • Cure state that varies between batches traces back to inconsistent active oxygen in the peroxide
  • Liquid peroxide handling needs pumps, containment and a decanting procedure a solid does not
  • Peroxide stored above 30 °C or in sunlight loses activity before it reaches the mixer
  • Contact with acids bases or heavy metal compounds degrades the peroxide silently in the store

What We Can Change

Can be packed according to customer requirements. Tell us the bag weight your batch weigh-up uses and we will quote against it.

Comparison

Against the Alternatives

Dicumyl peroxide is a solid crosslinker; the two cumyl hydroperoxide grades are liquid initiators. Its ten hour half-life temperature of 117 °C is well below the 140-145 °C of the hydroperoxides, which is what makes it usable in a rubber cure cycle. Its SADT of 75 °C is the highest of the three, so its storage limit is the 30 °C ceiling rather than a low temperature requirement.

Use guide

Handling Dicumyl Peroxide on Your Site

Written for the person who receives the drum, not for a brochure.

  • Store below 30 °C out of direct sunlight and away from acids bases and heavy metal compounds
  • Take the cure temperature reference from the 117 °C ten hour half-life figure
  • Open one 5 kg bag per batch rather than part-using a bag, to keep the remaining material sealed
  • Keep reducing agents out of the same store
  • Plan decomposition response around methane, acetophenone and 2-phenylisopropanol
