A Multifunctional Solvent
The pentanol mixture is used as a solubiliser for coatings, inks, pigments and industrial cleaning agents, and for synthesising spices, artificial resins, rubber and plastics.
Coatings and Inks
It works as a solvent in water-based coatings, organic solvent coatings, and UV and EB cured coating systems. In pigments and inks it acts as solvent, dispersant and thickener, and helps diffuse pigment molecules so that dispersion improves.
Cleaning
Its polarity lets it remove mixed dirt and oil quickly, which is why it appears in industrial cleaning formulations.
Flavours and Chemical Synthesis
It is an important raw material for spices and seasonings including fruit, chocolate and mint flavourings, and an auxiliary material in pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals and food. In synthesis it serves as an intermediate for ammonium chloride, ferrous chloride, styrene and fatty acids.
VOC Control
Because it is volatile it is also used in volatile organic compound control work, including reducing VOC emissions and odours caused by volatilisation from plastics or rubber.
Handling
The mixture is flammable. Use and storage must follow safe operating procedures to minimise fire and explosion risk. It ships in galvanised iron drum or ISO tank at 165 kg net per drum.
