n-Pentanol belongs to a technology-intensive industry. The research and development, optimisation, finalising and operation of the production process all involve specialist knowledge and technology, and the technical thresholds are relatively high.

Currently only a few companies worldwide hold large-scale production capacity for n-pentanol, such as Qilu Petrochemical and Dow Chemical.

What That Means for Buyers

A short supplier list is a supply risk. When a solvent or a flavour intermediate can only be made at scale by a handful of producers, a single plant turnaround moves the whole market, and buyers who qualified only one source lose the campaign.

It is also why the isomer specification matters. 1-Pentanol is supplied at 99.80% minimum amyl alcohol with isoamyl alcohol at 0.10% maximum and n-valeraldehyde at 0.03% maximum. The pentanol mixture is a different commercial product entirely, running 62-68% n-amyl alcohol and 32-38% 2-methylbutanol.

Where n-Pentanol Is Used

1-Pentanol is used as a solvent, an organic synthesis raw material and a plasticizer raw material, and in food flavours, pharmaceutical raw materials, flotation agents for non-ferrous metals and antifoaming agents for boiler water. In industry it is the main raw material for producing pentene, amylamine and bromopentane.
