Galvanized iron wire is supplied in two forms. Electric galvanized wire is processed from low carbon steel wire by drawing and electric galvanizing, in gauges from 8# to 16#.
Hot-dip galvanized wire is made from super carbon steel by drawing and hot-dip zinc coating, in gauges from 8# to 24#.
The thick zinc layer on hot-dipped wire offers superior corrosion resistance with a firm coating, at 40 to 300 g per square metre.

Electro and hot dip galvanized wire are sold as if they were the same product. They are made from different base steel, cover different gauge ranges and carry different amounts of zinc.
Gauge numbers mean different diameters in SWG, BWG and metric. That is where ordering errors happen, so the conversion table is published here.
Wire specified without a zinc coating weight will be supplied at whatever the mill happened to run.
Wire for weaving has to be consistent along its length or it breaks the loom, not just the product.

Material Options
Electric galvanized wire starts from low carbon steel wire, which draws cleanly and takes a thin, even zinc layer. Hot-dip galvanized wire starts from super carbon steel and carries a much heavier zinc layer, from 40 up to 300 g per square metre, which is why it lasts longer outdoors. The base steel and the coating are chosen together, not separately.
Quality Control
Check gauge against the SWG, BWG or metric column you ordered to - a 14# wire is 2.03 mm in SWG and 2.11 mm in BWG, and that difference matters on a loom. On hot dipped wire, confirm the required zinc coating weight in grams per square metre at order stage.
