Gabion Box Sack Gabion or Reno Mattress Which One Fits the Job
Three formats of the same idea, each with a job the other two do badly.
What they have in common
All three are wire containers filled with stone on site. They are flexible, permeable and corrosion resistant; they do not collapse even under a big scope of deforming; and the stone fill lets water seep through while retaining soil, so no additional drainage is needed to relieve hydrostatic pressures.
Gabion box, for retaining height
Made of hexagonal wire netting in six published mesh openings from 60x80 mm to 120x150 mm, with wire from 2.0 to 4.0 mm uncoated or 3.0 to 4.0 mm outside diameter PVC coated. The outside frame edge wire is one gauge thicker than the netting wire. Use it where the structure has to hold back a face.
Reno mattress, for lining a surface
A thin, wide structure of hexagonal double twisted wire mesh, 3 to 6 m long, 2 m wide and 0.15 to 0.30 m thick in 5x7 or 6x8 mesh. It is divided into uniformly partitioned cells by internal diaphragms and used for river bank and scour protection, channel linings for erosion control and embankment stability. Physical and mechanical properties meet or exceed ASTM A975-97.
Sack gabion, for emergency and underwater work
Cylindrical units of double twisted steel woven wire mesh panel in 6x8, 8x10, 10x12 or 12x15 cm mesh according to ASTM A 975 and EN 10223, from 0.54 to 1.80 cubic metres. They are supplied with reinforcing wires inserted during manufacture to make closing them easier during installation, and are filled on site to form flexible durable structures for river training and emergency works.
Top welded wire gabions, the shape-holding alternative
Constructed of rugged high tensile wire with a thick corrosion-resistant zinc layer, also available PVC coated. Unlike hexagonal units they hold their shape and do not bulge out when filled, and installation time can be as much as 40% less than hex type gabions. With diaphragms and stiffeners installed, they can be filled with standard loading equipment.
Coating, across all formats
The wire used in sack gabions is heavily zinc coated soft temper steel. Reno mattresses are available with different levels of coating protection, and where they come into contact with more aggressive environments an additional polymer protective coating is applied over the base coating.

Which format installs fastest?
Top welded wire gabions. Installation time can be as much as 40% less than required by hex type gabions, and they hold their shape rather than bulging when filled.
Can any of them be installed under water?
Yes. Baskets can be prefilled and launched to enable installation under water, which is why sack gabions are used for emergency river works.
What tolerance applies to Reno mattress sizes?
All sizes and dimensions are nominal, with tolerances of 3% of the width and length and 2.5 cm of the height permitted.
