What the minimums actually are, what drives them, and how to build a schedule that survives contact with a Chinese factory calendar.

What sets a minimum order quantity

MOQ is not an arbitrary number. It is the point where setup cost, component purchasing and line time can be recovered at a sensible unit price.

Component purchasing: many parts are bought in economic batch sizes
Line setup: changing a line over costs time whether you build 100 units or 5000
Custom colour: colourant batches and purging waste set a practical floor around 3000 units
Tooling: an ODM housing needs volume to recover the mould investment

Custom colour or custom packaging: 3000 units
New ODM tooling: 3000 units per production run

Lead times that hold

These are working timelines, not best cases. A schedule built on best cases fails.

Samples: 5 to 7 days for stock units
Stock production: 15 days after the deposit clears
Private label with printed packaging: 25 to 35 days
New ODM product: 75 to 95 days to first production run

The calendar problems nobody mentions

Two periods each year reshape every schedule in Chinese manufacturing, and planning around them is free.

Chinese New Year: production stops for two to three weeks and capacity is tight for several weeks either side
October national holiday: a shorter but real interruption
Peak season from August to October, when everyone is shipping for the year-end retail period
Book production slots for Q4 delivery by mid-year rather than in September

Building a schedule that works

Work backward from the date the goods have to be on shelf, and add the steps buyers routinely forget.

Start from the shelf date, not the shipping date
Add ocean transit: roughly 30 to 40 days to Europe, 18 to 30 days to the United States west coast
Add customs clearance and inland delivery in the destination
Add sample approval time before production, which is often the step that slips
Keep two weeks of contingency, because the first order in a new relationship always finds something

For samples and small trial quantities, yes, at a higher unit price. Below 500 units on a stock configuration the setup cost dominates and the price stops being commercially useful for either of us.

What are the payment terms

Typically 30 percent deposit with the balance against the bill of lading copy. Terms for repeat customers with an established record are discussed case by case.

How long before Chinese New Year should we order

For goods needed in the first quarter, place the order and approve samples before the end of November. Capacity in the weeks before the holiday is booked early.

For customers on a rolling forecast, yes. We hold components rather than finished goods, which keeps replenishment at 15 days without tying up your cash in finished inventory.
