What actually causes a jam
A feeder jams when kibble bridges across the opening above the auger, or when a single piece wedges between the auger and the housing wall. Both are geometry problems, and both get worse as kibble shape varies.
- Bridging: kibble forms an arch above the dispensing opening and stops falling
- Wedging: a single piece lodges between the rotating auger and the fixed wall
- Flat or oversized kibble makes both far more likely
- Humid food clumps, which turns a marginal design into a failing one
The reverse-rotation approach
The simplest reliable fix is to let the mechanism clear itself. When the motor meets resistance above a threshold, it reverses briefly, which breaks the bridge or releases the wedged piece, then resumes.
- Current sensing detects abnormal resistance on the motor
- The auger reverses briefly, then resumes forward rotation
- Most obstructions clear within one or two cycles without any user action
- If it does not clear, the app reports the event rather than failing silently
Why the opening geometry matters more than the motor
A stronger motor forces kibble through and grinds it. The better answer is an opening sized and shaped so bridging is unlikely in the first place.
- Opening width sized against the largest common kibble in the target market
- Rounded transitions rather than sharp internal corners where food catches
- A stirring feature above the auger to keep food moving
- Smooth internal surfaces so damp food does not adhere
Testing that actually predicts field behaviour
Testing with one ideal kibble proves nothing. The test needs to reflect what customers actually feed.
- Test across several kibble shapes and sizes, including flat and oversized
- Test with food conditioned in a humid environment
- Run continuous cycle testing well beyond expected product life
- Confirm the reported portion weight holds across all tested kibble types
What to ask a supplier
These four questions distinguish a designed solution from a hopeful one.
- What happens mechanically when the auger meets an obstruction
- Is the jam event reported to the app or does it fail silently
- Which kibble shapes were used in testing
- What is the portion tolerance in grams across those kibble types
