HDPE and MPE Pallet Netting Materials Explained

HDPE Holds Where You Put It

The standard net is knitted from 100 percent virgin HDPE. High density polyethylene is comparatively stiff. Once the net is applied at a given tension it stays at that tension rather than trying to recover.

That behaviour suits regular loads. Stacked crates of a single size, uniform cartons, anything that will still be the same shape at delivery as it was at dispatch. The net holds the stack together and does not need to do anything clever afterwards.

MPE Keeps Pulling

The elastic net is knitted from 100 percent virgin MPE, metallocene polyethylene, chosen for its recovery behaviour. Its stretch rate is 15 to 50 percent, determined by the weight of the load.

That last phrase is the important one. The net does not have a single fixed elongation. A light pallet draws it out toward the lower end of the range and a heavy pallet toward the upper end, so the holding force scales with what is on the pallet.

Why Recovery Matters In Transit

Loads settle. Vibration over a long road or sea leg compresses cartons, closes gaps between layers and takes a few millimetres out of the stack height. A rigid wrap set at dispatch does not follow that movement, so it goes slack. An elastic net recovers as the load moves and stays in contact.

Why Virgin Resin

Both grades are specified as 100 percent virgin resin. In a knitted product, consistency across a long roll depends on filament strength being predictable. A weak filament in a knitted mesh can ladder under tension, and on a 4000 m automatic roll that is a problem you will only find on the line.

How To Decide In Two Minutes

• Is every case on the pallet the same size and does the load arrive the same shape it left? Standard HDPE.
• Are case sizes mixed, or does the stack step across the layer? Elastic MPE.
• Do the goods compress under their own weight? Elastic MPE.
• Is the transport leg long enough for vibration to settle the load? Elastic MPE.
• Have wraps been arriving loose despite being tight at dispatch? Elastic MPE.
