DIN 43703 DC Shunt

A current transformer cannot see DC. A calibrated shunt can: a precision alloy blade that turns a large DC current into a small, standard millivolt drop the instrument can read.

  • Current range1 A to 4000 A
  • Accuracy classClass 0.5 to 0.2
  • Voltage drop50, 60, 75, 100, 150, 200, 300 mV
  • StandardIEC 61010-1:1990
  • Temperature-40 °C to +60 °C
  • Overload120 % rated current for 2 hours
  • Heat load (≤ 50 A)Temperature rise not exceeding 80 °C
  • Heat load (> 50 A)Temperature rise not exceeding 120 °C

Product Overview

Shunts are used to measure DC current, produced by the principle of resistance where a voltage is generated across the resistor according to the DC current.

Shunts are widely used to expand the range of instruments measuring current, with a fixed value shunt resistor in precision alloy. They can be used in communication systems, electronic machines and automatic control of power supply circuits for current limiting, and for current sampling and testing.

Application Scenarios

  • DC current measurement in electric meters
  • Communication systems and electronic machines
  • Automatic control of power supply circuits for current limiting
  • Current sampling and test work

FAQ

Questions Buyers Ask

Which voltage drop should I order?

Match the instrument. 75 mV and 60 mV are the most common panel meter inputs; 50 mV and 100 mV are common in battery and telecom systems. The drop is what the meter is scaled for, so it has to match exactly.

Why does a shunt get hot?

It dissipates I²R. The published heat load limits are a temperature rise not exceeding 80 °C below 50 A rated and 120 °C above it, which is why large shunts need free air around them.

Is DIN 43703 the same as the US pattern?

No. The European DIN 43703 footprint and the US base mounted pattern differ, and both are supplied. Say which market the panel is for when you enquire.

Can a shunt measure AC?

It can, but it is rarely the right tool: there is no isolation between the measuring circuit and the line. For AC use a current transformer.
