Product Overview

The CA/CP series current transformer comprises ten specifications. It is compact, smaller than other models with the same current ratio of the transformer, and the clamshell style terminal cover protects the secondary terminal well. With the related accessories you can use DIN rail mounting, from 5 A up to 3000 A.

Current transformer principle is based on electromagnetic induction. The current transformer is composed of a closed core and windings. Its primary winding has very few turns and is connected in series with the line in which current is to be measured; the secondary has more turns and is cascaded into measuring instruments and protection circuits. In service the secondary loop is always closed, so the impedance of the instruments and protection coils in series with it is small.

Questions Buyers Ask

How do I calculate the burden of a current transformer?

Add the VA of every device in the secondary loop plus the loss in the secondary cable, then pick the next standard burden above that total. The CA series is offered at 2.5, 5, 10 and 15 VA. If the connected burden is far below the rated burden the CT still works; if it is above, the ratio and phase error leave the declared class.

What is the difference between the CA and the MES series?

They share the electrical ladder and the same standards. The CA body is the more compact of the two for a given ratio and uses a clamshell terminal cover; the MES body carries three built in fixing methods and a hinged cover. Panel space usually decides.

Is a 1 A secondary available?

Yes. Every CA frame is available with a 5 A or a 1 A secondary. A 1 A secondary is normally chosen where the run between the CT and the instrument is long.
